View Full Version : divs3.2 _fast_ codec confusion

hiya,
i'm new to this site/forum but have been encoding using divx since the divx.cc (or whatever it was) site - thru div4 and now the problematic divx5 (audio sync problems when playing in wmp6.4 and personally i hate the playa - it doesn't like playing 48k mp3 vids - gives a very audible hiss) - cut to the question...

i got out bangkok dangerous (amazing film) from my library and now want the best single 700mb rip i can get. being baffled by nandub and even gk i thought i'd go back to avirevolution to mix my slow rip (750kbps->670mb) with a fast motion rip.
I encoded with fast motion divx3(.2?) and got a 443mb file from 750kbps. So I thought I might as well try again with a higher bitrate so i encoded again at 1500kbps fast motion and only got a 459mb file!! Baffles me even more.

So, my question is why is this? and if I stay stupid and stick to avievolution for the time being should I be encoding at 2500kbps fast or something to get a decent file size fast motion movie to mix with my 670mb low motion one?
(am i wrong in assuming the best file sizes to mix are as near to <700mb as poss?)

thanks in advance,

monkman

you might want to check out FairUse, it's very simple, and you'll get perfect filesize results.

Hi monkman-Welcome to the forums

I'm messing with that film right now-just ran a compress test and found it's very compressible-just about the whole thing takes place at night. I don't know what resolution you're using, but use a higher one if you want to fill up the CD. you can give your fast motion rip all the bit rate you want, but it won't get much larger.

This R1 version is full screen-is yours wide screen? I hate full screen.

hi manono

yeah - the r2 disc is also 4:3 unfortunately.

i'm re-sizing to 512x416.

kinda settled with avirevolution mixed file from a 750low and a 3000high giving 688meg avi (192kbps mp3).
checked out FairUse but have already given the disc back to the library so next time.

what resolution are you using?

Hi-

Mine's 544x400. The compress test gave a 65% figure, so the result when the 2nd pass finishes should be pretty good. But you can use somewhat higher resolutions with true VBR encoding than with the programs that blend the encodings together. Pocohaas is right, though. Fair Use is the best of those types of programs. Slow as Christmas (because of the multiple encodes), but super easy and good results.

Your libraries have movies of that type? We should be so lucky.
