I'm a new user of IfoEdit trying to burn my first DVD-R. I want the DVD-R to include a different set of subtitles from those in the original VOB file. IfoEdit seems to be the best tool for this task of the freeware tools that I have seen so far. I have a set of VOB and IFO files that are viewable in IfoEdit. The VOB files (4.18 GB) contain a subpicture straem in Japanise that I want to strip out and replace a new set of English subtitles with the same times. The IfoEdit guides on this site imply that this can be done, but do not say exactly how.

My next task seems to be to prepare the new subpicture stream. I have the new subtitles and their associated times in a srt text file. The times for the new subtitles match those in the original subpicture stream. I have converted the srt file to ssa format and used MaestroSBT to create a set of bit maps. However, MaestroSBT seems designed to be used with DVD Authoring software (which I would like to avoid) and it is not clear if this output can be used with IfoEdit.

My questions are:
1) Is IfoEdit an appropriate tool for this job?
2) Is there a freeware tool that will convert the MaestroSBT bit maps
into a subpicture stream? - or - Is there a better way to create the
subpicture stream directly form the text information?
3) Once I have the new subpicture stream how do I get it into to the VOB / IFO files using IfoEdit?

well u have a big NO to all questions.

1. No. Ifoedit is not the best tool for this job

2. No. There is none. In fact it cant be done. Subpictures dont physically exists, the stream is produced on the fly by the authoring programm when u r creating the image to burn, they mux with video and audio and a set of vob files are produced.

3. If u use vobrator u can have a file with extension spes (subpicture elementary stream) but u cannot use it, since there is no prog that can remux it back to vob or edit it or even produce it from your bmps other than an authoring one.

3. You can open it in vobsub, convert it to bitmaps, time it and use in authoring program :) :) :)

No, AFAIK there are no timing information in subtitle stream, so it is simply impossible. Maybe one day IfoEdit will grow to be a complete DVD de/re multiplexing tool, like VcdXBuild is for SVCDs, but even if derrow is aiming for such a goal (and I'm not sure about that), it is nowhere nearby.

Of course there is timing in the subpicture stream, the same as other streams (actually, more - besides SCR in the pack headers, and PTS/DTS in the PES header, the "code" contains the delays for each part of the presentation).

But IfoEdit does not remux anything (right now) but video.
