View Full Version : Problem opening LOG File in GKnot Solved !

Hello everyone,
I have noticed in many people's log files there is an "ERROR : CAN'T OPEN LOG-FILE" "CAN'T COUNT FRAMES" ect.... and I think this could solve your problem.
I had the same problem of it now opening the LOG File and I managed to solve it like so :
What I did is go to VirtualDub and go to Video -> Compression and looked if the "DivX 5.02 Codec" showed on it's list. If it was there it would encode the movie just fine, but if it wasn't there (and I have tested this MANY times) it would give me that message "could not open log file" in the GKnot log and all I would do then is restart my machine and check it again. Normally it would be there in the VirtualDub Compression list after the restart.
So, I don't think it's problems with horizontal resolutions because that i've never had a problem with.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Never had the problem myself, but I've heard about a dozen times that people solved this problem by re-installing Divx5 and/or Gknot and by making sure that Divx 4 was totally uninstalled. I guess if Divx 5 sometimes doesn't show in the encoders list, re-installing would indeed help.

I've tried re-installing it too, and that does work as well but I think the solution I provided works and the thing is I just want to know if anyone this method works for other people that's all. I've noticed as well that whenever someone posts there .avs file / log file there is always a line : "ERROR : Can't open LOG-FILE". I only get that error when I forget to check for DivX 5.02 Codec in the Video -> Compression menu in VirutalDub.

I've tried what you suggested, but to no avail. It still fails every time. Any other ideas?

In Akolite's case, he was still having problems due to Fast Deinterlace and not being up to date with GKnot's bugfix.

Thanks a lot.
I did what you said.and
You perfectly solved my these 4 weeks problem.
Now I can make 4.7GB file to 700MB that I used to.
Thanks again, genios!

Yeh... Mine was the de-interlace thing.
Thanx again jggimi

Hi all,
I have fresh installation of Windows XP Pro, and a fresh installation of Gknot with the latest updates. I also installed DivX 5.0.2 (not pro) on the machine. I have a similar setup on another PC and I've never had any proble with it...
However, on this new machine, I'm crashing into the "unable to open log file" error as soon as I try running the compressibility check...
Obviously, this is not a problem with DivX 5.0.2, which appears in the compression panel within VirtualDub...
What are these horizontal resolution and/or de-interlace stuff ? Could it be _my_ problem ?
Thanks for helping out

Hi-
Could it be _my_ problem ?
Yes, it certainly could. Why don't you post a sample .avs (and leave out the lines starting with "#").

Yeh... Post avs file. Check that u have updated Gknot with 0.261.

Hi,
I will post the .avs tonight when I get home (but where will I find it ? In the directory containing all my vob's and so on ?)
I did update to the last version
Akolite
2nd September 2002, 10:13
Yeh. It'll be in that directory. There should be two of them. One for the credits as well.

Hi all
I'd like to witness in this serie of post concerning
this problem I add too (same message "can't open log file".. bla bla)
my (short) story:
i followed the DivX 5 guide from doom9.org
-updated gknot (as said in the guide)
-installed the DivX 5.0 pro bundle (as NOT said in the guide), because i had a *registred* version for v5.0 pro (and not 5.02 pro) and here was my error :(
-followed the guide to compress my DVD
-launch the encoding
-error in log
-read this post
-installed v5.02 codec (not pro...)
-worx ! :)
moral of the story:
1.always follow the doom9.org guide and execute EACH step
(and don't try doing it yourself, coz he knows what he's doing)
2.always read the forum/faq if u have a problem, because there is 99.9999% chance someone else had the same problem already and solved it
long live to doom9! :)
:D
and thanks for the excellent job
I've been following this web site since DivX 3.11 and flask :) (remember go.to/doom9)
and the guides were ALWAYS right
cheers,

Hi w_o_moving-
I've been following this web site since DivX 3.11 and flask
And only now you're making your first post? Come on man, share your knowledge. Help out the newer guys.:)
Can we use your testimonial for the new ad campaign coming up?:)

(The GKnot defaults are divisible by 32 and 16. You must have changed the modulo values on the resolution tab.)

I have found the following order of processing reliable and reasonably fast (pseudocode):Source

... and btw. compression is more effective when your video is W:8 H:8 (because of the block size).
Plus if you want to encode videos that are 100% compatible to all other computers and not only yours, better use W:32 H:16 (you can never be sure which graphics adapters are having overlay problems with weird resolutions)

i have the same problem with the log file, but from what i see it
appears to be a naming mismatch in that it creates the following
file in the 1st pass "s01e01_GKnot.log" but then tries to open this
log file "s01e01.log" in the 2nd pass which does not exist, hence the
error "Error: Could not open E:\THEINVISIBLEMAN_01\s01e01.log"

Yes, by reading THIS STICKY (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48936) you'll find that GKnot v0.27 only supports DivX 5.02
