View Full Version : What's the best way to capture from an ATI AIW Radeon?

I have a few programs on my Tivo that I want to move to DVD. I've got an ATI All In Wonder Radeon and it's set up to capture. I just got the new 7.7 drivers which capture in MPEG 2 format.

I'm used to authoring in DVDMaestro, but it seems that DVDMaestro won't accept the .mpg files that the ATI software produces.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how best to capture/author these programs to DVD. Picture quality is important to me.

Thanks,

Roveer

The ATI MMC records in a nonstandard MPEG2 format.

1. You can try PVAstumento (www.offeryn.com) to see if it will create a standard MPEG2.

or if option 1 doesn't work

2. If you're using Win2000, you can install the WDM/VfW wrapper and cap the AVI using Vdub, then encode to MPEG2 with TMPGEnc.

Someone else may have a better idea.

I have no problems creating DVD from ATI mpg files. I can import them as assets in SpruceUp, make chapters and menues and export the title set and burn to DVD.

I've noticed it works a little bit better if I demux the mpg mefore importing it to SpruceUp. Maybe it's the same thing with DVDMaestro? You can try a simple demultiplex in TMPGEnc MPGTools and name the vide filename.mpv and the audio filename.mpa and then import filename.mpv as an asset in DVDMaestro. There is DVD compliant profiles in ATI MMC 7.7 that you can try.

Do you capture in NTSC format? Then it may be problems with the mpg audio (should'nt be but according to DVD specs you need at least one ac3 or one pcm audio stream on NTSC DVD). Try converting the audio to ac3 or wav and see if that helps.

What video bitrate do use? If the bitrate is set too high you may get peaks above the DVD specs and that could be a reason why DVDMaestro don't like it. You should not need to go higher than 7000 kbit/s VBR or 8000 kbit/s CBR.

By the way, have you upgraded to ATI MMC 7.7.0.1?
There is a fix in the latest version that solve some problems with DVD compliance (invalid GOP headers or something similar). I have no problems with version 7.7.0.1 (but 7.7 worked as well for me).

be sure to use 48khz for audio, once I changed this setting I could import in maestro fine...

Erm... in DVDMaestro you need to de-multiplex your .mpg file. DVDMaestro requires 2 separate files of Audio and Video. If you have captured your audio at 48khz, you are okay.. Just then use the MPEG Tool in TMPGEnc to de-multiplex your file. If not, DVDMaestro will give you an error of Media file Unsupported.
