Hello everyone!
This is my first post, so i just wanted to introduce myself to everyone and share some of my experiences, and what i have learned so far.
First off though, i really have to take my hat off to Doom9, the maker of this AWESOME site. You dont need to look anywhere else, everything about cds and dvds copying is right here! I have leanred a LOT of stuff just reading the forums, and guides. Also, the experts on here are very helpful, and extremly knowledgeable, like arky, trilight, doom9, commanderxl, and others, well if i forgot anyone, you know who you are! If it wasnt for this site, i would not have learned how to do this-
Basically, what i have learned so far is this-
This isnt an exact science ( at all). One guys nightmare, is another guys dream come true. There is very little consistency to cling to. Alot of people trash windows ME, but thats what im using, and i think it kicks the shit out of windows 9x, and 2000, and XP. I think it is perfectly stable, but that might be just that i have a ton of RAM.
This is alot like cooking. Everyone has their own recipe. And everyone likes their stew to taste a certain way. You just have to find a recipe that works right for you, then enjoy some movies!
One thing that i totally dont understand, and maybe someone can help me with this- , why the hell are people bothering to go through the nightmare of encoding, and reencoding just to get the movie on one disk??? Why sacrifice quality just so you can it all crammed on 1 disk? That seems really stupid to me. If im going through all this trouble, i want an exact 1 to 1 copy of the bitch, and i dont mind having it on 2 discs anyways because i like to get up and make a sandwich , or something- whatever- So, why reencode and minimize quality??
The splitting method that i have found that works is this- Using smartripper, rip have the movie on one folder, then rip the other half to another folder, and then ifoedit each folder, make the necessary adjustments, and burn two discs. Sure, this might take longer, but i want the exact quality thats on the DVD. I tried to split it with IFOedit, but it never worked. Your mileage may vary. If people ARE successully getting the split vobs to work, i would like to know how.
Anyways, after making about 9 drink coasters in a row <g>, i finally got one right. (hey, we all gotta start someewhere). It played flawlessly on all computer dvd players, but i took the disc to best buy, and it played on about every other one. I dont know why this is. Actually i noticed that EVERY sony i played it on, worked fine. Like i said, this thing is really hit and miss, you just gotta find out what works for you, and then go for it.
I would like to hear other peoples experience with going from DVD9 to 2 DVD5s. Does anyone use a different method? In my method, the only software that you need is Smartripper, ifoedit, and recordnow.
happy burning!
