Hi, My problem is probably very comon , but i cant find any posts that describe what i am having trouble with.
After tuning in my Hauppauge tv card to my cable box (lets call it "CH6") using my cable box control i can select different channels still tuned to CH6 , now some channels looks normal ( Like they do on my tv) but some channels have bad noise and a vertical fuzzy white line down the left side. After using noise filters after capture i decided that i realy need to sort this problem out, i tried plugging in the "cable" directly to my pc ( no cable box) but i can only recieve unencrypted channels, but these channels have NO noise on them...? any help ???

My Hauppage is also very sensitive to bad signals. Some channels of my cable connection are almost unwatchable. With a normal TV, you only see a slightly worse quality on that channels.
Try to optimize the connection (best cable you can get, and so on), but other than that, I guess you can't do much...

Thanks looks like its the noise filters and cropping then LOL :D BTW is filtering AT capture better than after? ...i take it theres more chance of dropped frames etc? I also keep getting ghosting effects if i "DEnoise" too much ...has any one made a "DEghost" filter? or should i use a smoother instead ?

do all your filtering in post-processing

i've been doing a lot of vhs testing this week and have to let you know that vlad's convolution3d filter (check the avisynth forum thread "smooth in time and space") is truly amazing at noise reduction / detail retention / no ghosting; well, works for me!

regarding ghosting specifically on the source (not due to a temporal filter), try the exorcist filter (great name for a filter)

Have you tried piping it trough a VCR? Perhaps that helps.
(to make it clear, tune vcr to the channel of your cable box, tune WinTV to channel of your vcr).

Cheers

try "convolution3d.txt" from the convolution3d.zip file for getting an idea about the setup.
