Hi all

All I ever DIVX are DVD movies. Whats the general concensus on Pre Processing when encoding ?

Should I use it, if so what level and exactly what does it do?

Basically, what are its Pros & Cons ??

Thanks to all who reply.

You should not use it with DVD sources, because usually they are clean enough. You can use it with noisy sources, like analogue captures or DV footage. The pre-processing filters the frames before encoding (but I must admit that I don't know how exactly). This will result in a blurrier picture, but it will improve compressibility.

Regarding noisy sources you should consider using AviSynth or VirtualDub filters instead, because you can achieve better quality. On the other hand, the integrated pre-processing is easy to use. When I compressed a film captured from a noisy TV channel recently, I used strong pre-processing and got good results.

If you have a DVD that is really hard to compress you can try using "light" (but better try it first on a small piece and see if you like it). Usually, the most filtering I accept for DVDs is Precise Bilinear Resizing, nothing more.

For tv-captures, I almost always use "normal" (in addition to some other filters before), it's pretty effective and very fast.

theReal, do you use VirtualDub for capturing? If yes, I recommend to use the denoising during capture, works great for me (see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31172 )
