For some reason, when playing avi files I can't see the pic, only a grey screen. I can hear the sound. It doesn't matter which player I use. Any ideas or suggestions? I would sure appreciate it.

Check the contrast/brightness/... settings of the decoder filter.

It didn't help at all. It doesn't adjust it one way or another. I can't figure out what the problem is. Any other ideas? I'm really at a loss.

My suggestion is that some old Mpeg codec hacks are missing.
I remember that once installing them that problem disappeared in my case.
Stil wondering why the player opens the avi anyway?
Maybe it's because the hacked decoder is capable ...?
Worth a try, mate.

It's probably MS MPEG4 V3, which isn't allowed as an avi codec. Try opening it in virtualdub and clicking File>File Information. Under decompressor, if it says MS MPEG4 V3, then you can either watch it in virtualdub, The Player 2 (I noticed that it can play it.), or reencoded it using a different, supported, codec.
