sorry if this is covered a lot or is ridiculously easy, i could not find anything when i searched(perhaps due to stupidity).
Anyway. i am doing a 2cd encode of amelie in divx5. i want to place the subtitles in the black bar below the actual film. so i set the crop to zero, however its just a little too small for when two line apear, is it posible to do a negative crop and enlarge the black bar in gordian or will i have to do it manually?
thanks a lot for any help.

Hi-Welcome to the forums-

Well, you could use the AddBorders command by editing the .avs. If I were doing it though, I'd OCR the subs into SSA format (as I did) and make the movie without black bars and save on the bits. That will also allow you to fix the mistakes in the subs, and then when you play the movie, you can adjust the position of the subs on the screen so that they're down in the black bars that the player adds.

If you're asking yourself "What mistakes?", then you might be interested in this:

Also, back to the original question-did you lower the sub position in VobSub as much as possible by increasing the "y" value over on the right side under the red box? 40 or so might make it possible to squeeze them into the bottom black bar already there. But if you do it that way though, you'll have to be real careful about keeping correct AR.

thanks you kindly, just as a point of further stupidity, ocr? ssa? i presume you mean split the subs seperatly as described in the doom9 tutorial?
my favoutite mistake that i noticed between the uk cinema and the (possibly us) poor dvd rip i downloaded, was that when amelie rings the sex shop they state that shaved legs dont go down well in the us version where as the uk (and i assume original) theres an altogether more taboo meaning to "are you shaved".
thanks a lot

Hi-

OCR=Optical Character Recognition. It's the method Doom9 outlines in his SubRip Guide. Newer versions of the SubRip program allow you to rip directly to SSA now as well as SRT and the other sub formats.

But if you're willing to overlook the few sub errors, then I would just recommend adjusting the position of the subs on the screen using the red box in VobSub. I think the way to maintain AR would be to crop everything and then do a Smart Crop Left-Right and then return the full black bars across the bottom (not positive about that though-never done it).

Oh yeah-the R1 DVD got the "shaved" part right. Must have been a funky translation in the net rip.
