View Full Version : DivX5 AVI file size too large ?!

I try to capture video from VCR and encode "on the fly" with DivX 5.1 (plain - not pro version). But, no matter what I do and what bitrate I select, final filesize is much bigger than I want.
I used 1-pass VBR encoding and bitrates 900 and 600 but in both cases files are larger than 800MB ... Is there any way to setup it to produce file with desired size (based on used bitrate) using 1-pass (necessary because it encode in realtime during video capturing) ?

Are you using a bitrate calculator to find a good bitrate? Usually, Divx 5 sticks to the set bitrates if you leave the quantizer settings alone. If you set min and max quantizer to 2, for example, you'll always get 100% quality, no matter what bitrate you enter. The default is min=2 max=12 - if your files are still too big and you're sure about your chosen bitrate, then increase the max. quantizer to 14 or 16, that could help for really low bitrates (but it doesn't produce good quality if the codec really has to use quants higher than 12...)

I use 1-pass with bitrate 1000 for 60 minute movie (1000 is less that bitrate calc gives me for 700 MB CD) but final file (only video) is bigger than 800 MB.
All other setings are leaved as codec sets them except performance-quality which I set to "fast".
:(
This is obvious problem because 1-pass works with variale bitrate. 1-pass quality based mode is better (constant quality) but I can't figure out what quantitizer value to put to get desired filesize (is there any bitrate calc. that can calculate that value ?)

I'm not sure if that's a common problem with 1-pass. Maybe it is and the codec just doesn't get the bitrate right. I don't know.
With fixed quantizers, there's no way to calculate the filesize. That depends only on the video. Only black frames with quant 2 will be very small, DV video with quant 2 results in bitrates from 5000-8000...
