View Full Version : Unable to play DivX movies on Win XP

I need some help: I'm currently unable to play any DivX movie (encoded with 3.11 or 5.0) on a Win XP Pro system with a 5.02 codec.

On the best case, the display is corrupted: I have attached four screen captured for you to see.

I'm using BsPlay instead of Win Media Player but the result is even worse with this latest.

Did I missed something ? Anyone can help ?

TIA,
Mr Psanter

Have you tried ffdshow?

I'd also recommend removing anything Divx-related on your computer, including running regedit and removing any matches for "divx", and unregistering and deleting any remnant Divx filters or dlls in system32.

Also, what if you uninstall Divx 5, and just install 3.11? Do the 3.11 movies with the 3.11 filter look the same? If they do, it doesn't sound like the Divx filter is the problem.

Thanks for your feedback.

1st of all, the 3.11 movies look exactly the same with the 3.11 filter, it doesn't make any difference if I'm using the 3.11, 5 or 5.02 codec to see the movies, the display is always corrupted.

I don't know what is ffdshow and how do I use it?

Next, you suggest to remove any DivX related material from the registry: if I do that, how will I be able to playback some DivX content without any DivX codec? Did I missed something?

Finally I want to emphasize that those movies were encoded by myself on a Win 98 SE system and that everything was ok: maybe someone heards about incompatibilities between Win XP and DivX?

Thanks in advance,
Mr Psanter

ffdshow is an alternate playbick filter for DivX, XviD, and other MPEG-4 formats. Its in the download section.

I was suggesting that if uninstalling and re-installing did not work.

The only thing I can think of regarding incompatibilities could be your video card drivers. Try updating.

Another thing you could try would be to open up WMP 6.4 and setting hardware acceleration to "none" in options.

Ok, I have tried ffdshow (after uninstalling the divX codecs) but it doesn't make any difference.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the DivX 5.02 codec didn't make any change either and finally I upgraded my display driver (RADEON 64 MB ddr VIVO) without any effect.

One last point, I noticed that playback is now taking almost 100% of CPU time and it plays at a very slow motion rate.

Do you suggest to reinstall Win XP or Win 98 SE ?
Do I have any other (and less painful) option ?

have you tried the DivX Alpha Player? sometimes that will be the only player to play things correctly in WinXP. i know it's not the best solution, as you'd like to make the video player correctly in all players, but it could be a temporary solution for now.
