subtitles from scratch...

Can anybody suggest a program to create subtitle files from scratch. Maybe, the right question to make is: Is there a program like this? Is there any guide for these? Creating subtitles with Notepad really sux...

One very useful feature it has is allowing the use of an 8-bit Mono WAV file you make from your Audio track. It makes the timing much easier.

I´ve just seen it. It´s kinda complicated isn´t it? Is there any guide for that?? If not, we might start thinking about asking some of the guide writers for one.

Hi-

Yes-it has a bit of a learning curve, but it is very powerful. It comes with a very good Help file (ignore all that stuff about GenLocks and Laser Disk and VCRs-it was created a while ago), and as you play around with it, you'll get the hang of it. If I learned how, anyone can. Just remember-you need an 8-bit mono WAV file. At first I kept trying to feed it Stereo files, and then 16-bit Mono files before I went and tracked down a program that could create 8-Bit Mono. The Audio programs on this site (BeSweet-HeadAC3he) are actually too good for that. You'll have to use something else. And it doesn't really synch the subs-you do that. But it still makes it way easier.

Ok! I was thinking of using the AVI2WAV converter in order to get the 8-bit mono audio track you told me. What do you think? Is that the tool you use?? If it´s not can you tell me wich one is that?

I found a Demo version of Blaze Wave Creator to use, but I don't think it makes much difference what you use as long as it can make 8-bit Mono. Have you checked some of the subs sites to see if there's a Portuguese sub file already available for your movie? But I can't help you there. I'm just a lazy English speaker.:)

Audio>Full Processing Mode; convert to 8bit...>File-Save WAV

Anyone who know how to open an avi file in ssa?
Is it possibly?
Or how to use audio trigger to make rows automatically? :D
I've searched the helpfile but not found it.

If I may suggest a simpler program than ssa, less powerful but suffecient for most needs, there it is:

This program makes translating subtitles in MicroDVD Player format
for movies much easier, so you don't have to worry about all {} stuff,
while you see both the original and the translated file at the same
time.

This program is freeware.

it can show you the avi, it can load an original vs your translation, very simple to use (5 minutes and you know all icons by heart).

if you like it, send some kind words to the author...

Yes, I know that program. And i have tested it.
But I prefere using another program instead for my
Translations, called Subtitle Editor.
But my question was...If I havent got an english sub to translate
from. And I have to make the timestamps manually.
Whats the best way to fix it, in SSA?
Either use automatic Trigger to detect rows, or By pressing
space on the keyboard.
Is there not any expert on SSA here? :D

What do you mean from scratch? You have a video file, let's say movie "Kill Bill 2" -and you need to create a textual subtitles? You know exactly what they are saying , but you need to put a frames/timestamps around the phrases?
Does it constitute "from scratch"? The you'll need to have it in SUB or SRT format, in a FPS of your choice?
Do I understand what you need?

I love this tool cause it's the fastest tool I never saw, basically it's a notepad with 3 command for sync, it can only sync the starts of sub and calculate the length of them. Basically I use SubWorkshop to sync the few end-of-subs

Why not just use Aegisub? It works the best for everything you could possibly think of, timing, translation, conversion, you name it.

And it has been developed for a long time, has a very helpful/loyal fan base, plus it's open source. Very nice program.
