View Full Version : DVobSub and older sub files

The other day I happened across a set of Vobsub subtitles for a certain movie I had also happened across :). I was in a hurry and didn't bother to test them before burning the CD, but when I did go to watch the movie later, I noticed the subs weren't working. I acquired these subs from a reliable source (a scene group), so I was pretty sure they had worked at one point. And I knew my DVobSub was working because I checked one of the rips I did myself. After about a half hour of experimenting, I made it work.

The IDX file for the release started with

# VobSub index file, v5 (do not modify this line!)

whereas mine started with

# VobSub index file, v7 (do not modify this line!)

Now, with a big warning like "do not modify this line," I of course, immediately modified that line in the release to v7. That alone didn't fix it. I scrolled down a little and noticed that my v7 file had two entries that the v5 didn't have.

# ON: displays only forced subtitles, OFF: shows everything
forced subs: OFF

# The original palette of the DVD in PGC#1
palette: [snip]

So I added the forced subs: OFF line to the scene group's release, and it worked (but I still had to leave it as a v7 file, not v5).

So is DVobSub looking for a forced subs line and if it doesn't find one, assuming that option to be ON even if it's off in DVobSub configure? Easy enough to test, I commented that line out of my rip, but the subs still showed. But if I comment out the forced subs line AND change my file to v5, the subs don't work. Maybe Gabest could check the DVobSub behavior for v5 files. :)

(Of course, if the scene groups would use the latest versions of VobSub, that would be ideal, but that might be wishful thinking.)

Could you send these subs to me somehow?

I've attached a rar, or I guess make that a ZIP as I look at the allowed extensions... to this message. In it are the original IDX and the RARred sub (it came pre-rarred, how thoughtful of them) and my fixed IDX.

Thanks.

Hehe, I know what was wrong, v5 needed the ifo, while you have no ifo there.

p.s. I think the attachment can be removed now to free up that 1 meg in the database :P

Ah. I wondered why they included the IFO. I might have it somewhere. :) Someone slap the scene groups and get them on the lastest versions, eh? :)
