Tough luck. The network admins don't want a lot of crap lying around on the machines, and so they have set it up so that you can't touch or create anything in c:\winnt. There's nothing you can do about this except begging the admins, but don't really think that they'll allow for it.

Had your university been running linux, all it would have required would have been a quick compile of mplayer and placing it in your homedirectory ^_^ (and it wouldn't even break anything on the network)

There's a player that can decode videos by having the decoder file in a subdirectory instead of the system directory. What was it again? BSPlayer? Can't remember for sure, sorry.

Well, hmm... if it is impossible to install the codec, it will be also impossible to install the player.
I think there is solution, but I'm not sure if it will work (never try with codecs). Try to copy the codec (divx.ax file I think) from the system32 dir of another computer which have already the codec installed in the system32 dir of the comp. with admin. restriction. Better if the source comp. has also Win2000 (or maybe other with NT code). Do not register - it is impossible w/o admin. rights. Try to play the file.
Pray. Hope it helps.

I think I remember someone saying that Divx Player 2.0 Alpha works without installation (I'm not sure). You can try to install it on another computer, then copy the directory to the Win2k machine, maybe you're lucky and it works.

Acaila is correct, BSPlayer will allow you to play Divx movies without installing the filter or anything, it just needs a little bit of work. And yes, I checked, you don't need admin rights to run it.

a) Download BSPlayer
b) Put divx.dll in the same folder as bplay.exe
c) Put divxdec.ax in the filters folder.
d) Make a file called bspfilters.dat in the same folder as bplay.exe. Put the following in the file:

[BSPlayer filter def file]
AddFilter divxdec.ax,{78766964-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71},Divx Decoder Filter

And you're done. Burn to CD with movie.

You can add XviD, DivX3, Intervideo AC3, whatever you want to this list, as long as you know the right CLSID. (Actually, for DivX3, all you need to do is put the filter in the folder.)

using the search I dug this post out because I was at a campus where the admin rights had been very restricted and so i was stuck with a similar problem,
but yeah so i tried what grug2k suggested and it totally worked, I was able to play the divx video through bsplayer without installing the codec. This is one feature Media Player Classic has got to have! Thanks!

This is one major aspect of BSPlayer that I really like- I wish more players would include a similar option. To me it would seem ideal that a Divx movie cd should automatically play using the player burned on the cd, and that player automatically loads up whatever filters necessary also on the cd (divx, vobsub, ac3, etc). That way, anyone can borrow a cd and it will play back despite whatever filters that person may not have installed on their pc. BSPlayer is pretty much capable of this, but it's pretty buggy- I haven't been able to load up multiple filters with great success.

now here is the deal,

a linux distro that is capable of booting and its only target is media playing.

its name is movix.
Supported formats are all formats supported by MPlayer(a player in linux, most noticeably DivX but more in general any AVI, MPG, QuickTime, MP3, OGG/VORBIS and a few others.)
man you can even play vcd's...

it recognized my old sound card and very crap tv card.i am even able to watch tv...

over at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29798 Media Player Classic is currently working on something similar to what bsplayer has.
