View Full Version : bbMPEG freezes after recover

Rungo
1st August 2002, 20:58
I am trying to make an SVCD out of an avi-file. I have done it once before, so I'm an absolute newbie, using DVD2SVCD.

For various reasons, I had to shut down my computer when the process was almost done, that is after encoding, when the "small" finishing programs ran. Upon restart of the computer, I used the "recover"-function, and the process began again alright. Only it freezes the same place everytime, that is at 81% complete in bbMPEG!

I have not changed any settings before pressing recover.

My pc is a Thunderbird 1133, K7S5a mb, 256 DDR, Win XP.

Below is a print of the dvd2svcd_log.txt, it's pretty long - sorry :

Hi Rungo,

a TBird 1133? - Seems to be the source of the problem. See Q60 of the Q&A as some of the hints also apply to bbMPEG when muxing also check your harddrive for heavy fragmentation.

Hope this helps,
Gerti

Hi Gerti,

thanks for your answer. I've read Q60 (again), but it doesn't say anything about being specifically related to AMD T-birds....?

As I understand it, there is pretty much none of the mentioned things in Q60, that I can do after it crashes, and that still leaves me without a method to save my pending project.

It's good advice anyway, though, and I will for starters try to run a stability test.

You're probably right about the fragmentation of my harddisk - I hate defragmenting, since it takes soooo long. I will try it today.

Is it possibly to start another conversion, without loosing the necessary files to recover the pending project?

... I just thought of something else:

Gerti: could you be a little more specific as to which of the methods in Q60 are applicable to bbMPEG too.....?

I wanted to say: "Seems you are overclocking your CPU and/or Memory" - this can also cause bbMPEG to freeze. What happens if you convert only a small chapter - does the process finish without any errors (try a different DVD perhaps) to make sure there isn't something messed up with your system.

In general, these hints apply also for bbMPEG issues:

- Don't overclock your CPU/memory.
- Decrease the memory timings in your PC's BIOS or use the defaults.
- Use the latest BIOS from your mainboard manufacturer.
- Make sure your power supply and your PC cooling is good.
- Use the latest chipset drivers from your mainboard manufacturer. (VIA 4-in-1)
- Do some stability tests like Prime95 and MemTest86. (See Q53)

Greetings,
Gerti

Hrmm.

I'm not overclocking anything, actually, so that shouldn't be the source of my problems.

I've tried to run one of the stability tests. It ran for about 2 hours, without problems.

More interesting, though, is that I actually started all over with the movie, and tried the process from the top. Exactly the same happened - after having worked for about 12 hours, the machine stopped at 81% finished, in bbMPEG!! After having waited a while, I closed bbMPEG (with the red x), and it looked like it restarted the multiplexing process automatically  . As with the first time, I got to SVCD creation, where it failed to create disc number 3. When I used the recover, it reported "SVCD creation finished!", although that is a fat lie!

I try to post the new log-file - perhaps there is anything interesting in it for you super-guys :)

.... I forgot to ad, that SVCDBuild created two of the three bin/cue-files, and they seem to be ok. Is there any way I can manually build the last part of the movie, so I don't have to try to start over (again!)?

Hi Rungo,

I tend to believe that there must be something wrong with the AVI that lets bbMPEG stumble. Do your "Encoded_audio_1.mp2" and your "Encoded_Video_CCE_PAL.mpv" play correctly on your PC?

Also, the cutting of bbMPEG seems to be wrong - the second image is way to small - so I would do it manually with bbMPEG to see if you can get around this then.

See this thread on how to do the cutting manually with bbMPEG:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27900

Then use VCDEasy to create your SVCDs or name the manually muxed MPEGs like the ones created by DVD2SVCD and do a "Recover" from the "SVCD Authoring" step.

Hope this helps,
Gerti

Hi Gertie.

First of all: thanks for your help. Thats cool.

Second: when I looked into the encoded audio and the encoded video on my HD, I found out, that everything was f..... up.

The audio was from another movie, that I tried to convert a week ago, but with which I didn't succeed.

The video was only half the movie in the pal-version, but the whole movie in the ntsc-version.

I gave up. I have uninstalled DVD2SVCD, and removed it all, and now I'm ready to start all over again.

Tough, but I wasn't really sure which files to keep and which to delete, so I took the step....

Thanks again - hopefully it all works out this time!
