hey guys,

i'm having a hard time finding the right way to encode svcd's with dvd2svcd.. i've been reading guides and reading this forum and things seem to get only more confusing.. it's like a giant jigpuzzle and i cant get all the pieces together..

what i need to know is which of these settings:

-smartdeinterlace
-force film on/off
-ivtc
-zigzag scanning order
-progressive frames
-other settings that depend on the source

to use when the source is:

-pure
-a hybrid
-interlaced

hope you guys can clear this up for me..

thnx in advance (:

I am somewhat new to DVD2SVCD, but I can at least relate my experiences so far. To the best of my knowledge, DVD2SVCD reads the source and interprets the aspect ratio and encode method (progressive, hybrid, or interlaced). It then sets the proper filters, etc. to transcode in CCE (have not tried it using TMPGEnc, but I am sure it would do the same thing). To date, for me, it has properly selected, automatically, from source those operations required for transcoding the following types (all NTSC):
16:9 Progressive
4:3 Progressive
4:3 Hybrid
4:3 Interlaced.
I have not yet run across a 16:9 hybrid or interlaced source.

I know the selections were proper for 2 reasons:
1. The end results (svcd's) play perfectly in my stand-alone.
2. Using discrete programs (Smartripper, DVD2AVI), I have verified the formats.

DVD2SVCD generates the proper avisynth script based on the source. You can verify this by viewing the script when the operation is complete. It is one of the output files generated. With different source material, this script will look different accordingly. There may be some examples where this doesn't work properly, but after about 50 dvd's, I have not found one. They all transcoded perfectly. I would be interested if anybody would care to post examples that seem to be troublesome.
