i went to mib 2 last weekend and it wasn't really widescreen. also spiderman and episode 1 came in a format that rather looked to me like 16:9. couldn't really tell for sure in the dimensions of a cinema but none of these movies filled the screen to the sides like movies used to do.

is this already part of the digital revolution they promised to come up? i know episode 1 was entirely filmed on digital equipment, dunno about the two other movies..

i sure know it pissed me off..

does anybody have a clue?

it was the operators fingers as he was holding the film in the right spot.

From my experience, all 2,35:1 movies are shown in 2,35:1 in cinemas! so I think it's simply your illusion :D

Spider-Man ( http://us.imdb.com/Technical?0145487 ) and MIIB ( http://us.imdb.com/Technical?0120912 ) are both Panavision, which is 1.85:1 (close to 16:9, or 1.77:1)

Star Wars Episode I ( http://us.imdb.com/Technical?0120915 ), however, was shot in Arriscope. If shown from film it should be 2.35:1, but if shown from digital it will be 1.9:1

Why not ask your theater if they are using digital projection?

there is only one cinema in town that uses a digital projector so far. the one where i watched all 3 movies is analogue.

@ bobo
i could surely notice its not as wide as usual, because the screen in that cinema goes almost to the very sides of the room. with those 3 movies there were meters of space at both sides unused.

@mpucoder
i watched episode one analogue and i was very surprised to see those blank spaces, wich i never have seen in that cinema before. actually your link tells about 35mm film negative and 2.35:1. so i really wonder now..

well, if i see it happen again, i'll go and ask in the cinema..

@jggimi: What was the purpose of that post?

Reason? The opening post in this thread was a question from justin_case, asking if anyone had a clue about the aspect ratio of Men In Black II.

That was my attempt to provide an answer. Sorry to have disturbed you.

The reason I asked was that it was simply a quote of one of the links I gave for technical info on all three films. Maybe you missed them?

Far from all fims are 16:9. The director sometimes doesn't want WS, since they think that sometimes other formats are more "artistically" right for the movie, or simply, a more appropriate format for it.

since most movies are actually made to be played in cinemas and widescreen ar is quite an adaption from what your eye naturally "captures", i doubt that. they throw 70mm over board to keep production costs low and i guess that is quite a driving force..

justin_case, do you doubt what I wrote? Don't, cause it's the god honest reality and doesn't have to have anything with the actual filmingequipment to do ;)
