As many people visiting this nice forum, english is not my mother tongue. So I think this attached list of chat abbreviations may help you people who still wonder what things like IMHO, AFAIK and ROTFLMAO means, LOL.:D

good idea - does it have "IIRC" on that list ? i must be thick or something but even tho my first language is english i always forget what that stands for. :^(
( actually, disregard the "or something" above :) )

I got a nice german/english site for that. It is a search-engine for acronyms and abbrevations.

I have always known IIRC as "If I Recall Correctly" and IMHO as "In My Honest Opinion"....but I guess abbreviations vary from person to person.

I think that this abbreviations are used a lot in the english forums I visit and many of my friends that do the same, keep asking me what is this? and that? and I've seen a couple of post here with questions like this, so it must be usefull at some point; though I don't know if it deserves to be made a sticky.:D

i found it very useful on several occasions...

I just saw that list and man . I think every little colloquial phrase in the english language has been acronymed on that list. It has been over done. I mean. Here's one for you that you haven't gotten on that list. it's NMA! yeah. can you guess what that one is? well it stands for NO MORE ACRONYMS! I mean it. Acronyms have become over done with. They are becoming grossly gibberish. I could've thrown up and mellow the carpet around me after seeing that "chat abbreviations.txt" profane list of acronyms. ugh! you might as well just take out all the vowels of every word you type and make sense out of that as you read it. blah!
here goes: Se frm rls blw fr mr nfrmtn abt wht cds yu r alwd to ys n yr psts.
Now there's your perspicuous sentence with NMA.

It is missing the ultimate TLA, which is, of course, TLA. (Three Letter Acronym)

why don't someone just create a program that does a instant translation of the acronym, instead of asking what they just said (or did someone already did that)
Ex: someone is reading a post and is wondering what "wtf" stands for; so they type it into the program and find out it stand for (well, you know what it stands for)

Stenography. Oh yes how much I miss the sway. or do you all miss it and thats why you want to encourage the habit of acronomizing typed language.
ste·nog·ra·phy (st…-n¼g“r…-f¶) n. Abbr. sten., stenog. 1. The art or process of writing in shorthand. 2. The art or practice of transcribing speech with a stenograph machine. 3. Material transcribed in shorthand. --sten”o·graph“ic (stµn”…-gr²f“¹k) or sten”o·graph“i·cal (-¹-k…l) adj. --sten”o·graph“i·cal·ly adv.

Acaila - IIRC, shortcut IMHO is always being translated/decrypted as In My HUMBLE Opinion... Even years ago i asked goy, what the hell was that shortcuts :rolleyes: ;) :D
I think that humble also more fits the reason, and usage of this shortcut. As people over net always trying to write his expressions honestly, but we are using IMHO into cases, where we have disagree with other opinion, and we have to do this politely.
So, its not like sayin - you are f*cking wrong, you as*hole, and im right.
Its like politely pointing that my opinion and / or experience slightly difers from the presented one :D
...but i can be wrong. After all, im from Czech and not US or UK :p ;)

how do you remove this post from being a sticky. it gets a little annoying when not so important topics become stickies and end up staying there for months on the top of the list.

of this post?!?
just as a reminder: it reads:
A list of abbreviations for non-english native speakers
well since you are an english native speaker (i believe so at least since you've stated LA as your 'position') this post is not intended for you. you are a native speaker and I as one of the non native speakers find this post from time to time very very useful!

so sum up some "common" TLAs&Co for chat:
TLA = three Letter Acronym
Ih8U = I hate You
Cu = See You
n8 = neight
LOL= laughing out loud
rofl= rolling on the floor laughing
2fast4u = too fast for You
IIRC = if I recall/remember correctly
IMHO = in my humble/honest opinion
AFAIK = as far as I know
wtf = what the f*ck/frell
ROFLMAO, I just submitted 31 (anime) acronyms to that site (acronymfinder), and got blocked temporarily because of too many submissions. LOL

Some of this stuff like "LOL" and "IIRC" you can find in this thread !!!
For all other stuff give Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) and AcronymFinder (http://www.acronymfinder.com/) a try... ;)

DRC = Dynamic Rate Change
i thought it was "dynamic range compression", a-la AC3? dynamic rate change sounds like a roundabout way of saying VBR to me.
[edit]
oh, and soul: why not add the one in your sig: CQM = Custom Quantisation Matrix

Dunno, this is what Google gives me...
- Dynamics Research Corporation
- Distribution Review Committee
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Diagonal Reverse And Center
- Disability Rights Commission
- Defense Review Committee
- Dynamic Range Control
- Dynamic Rate Change
- Data Resource Center
- Design Rule Checking
EDIT:
Dynamic Range Control and Dynamic Range Compression is the same thing, no?

TLA: three letter acronym
Amateurs!
TLA: Three Letter Acronym
ETLA: Extended Three Letter Acronym
TETLA: Twice-Extended Three Letter Acronym or DETLA (double-...)
SA: Short Acronym
I could have replied in the same way to a post a couple of ones down from the one I chose, but I didn't want to call a mod (moderator) an amateur. Not on my second post here, anyway. ;)
Here's a TETLA that entered English as a regular word (from the military): snafu (Situation Normal -- All F***ed Up). It usually means a problem or mistake now. I suppose FUBR/FUBAR probably comes from the military as well. It is as likely to mean "... beyond (all) repair" as it is to mean "... recognition" and often is written as "foo bar" to hide where it came from.
What does it say about me that I can only contribute with useless or obscene acronyms? Yeesh! :confused:

My favourite acronym is GTK, because it is stacked with a recursive at the end.
GTK
GIMP Tool Kit
GNU Image Manipulation Programme
Gnu Not Unix
There's probably even another acronym that makes use of GTK.

TWAIN --> Technology Without An Interesting Name.

Oh well, since a TWAIN driver isn't really a driver either, I guess the name is kind of consistent. (The acronym, which isn't really an acronym, is interesting because the acronym says it's not.) And they said irony was dead.
It's kind of like the Holy Roman Empire, which wasn't holy, nor Roman, nor an empire (it was a secular German confederacy), but other than that they got the name right. No wonder history was confusing.

Anyone who has any language skill can get their point across in a non-native language. Some people I can understand just fine who have heavy accents and barely speak English, because they at least know how to compose a Latin sentence, but some people just spout random nouns and verbs in no particular order and expect people to understand them. Reading bad English is a different story. It should NOT be tolerated here.
