ive just got the hang of backing up my dvds now im playing with a few svcd i have im converting them back 2 dvd-r and i wondered wot util would convert the mpeg audio 2 ac3 2 channel so my dvd player reponds 2 it the correct way

DVD can also have MP2 sound, it must be 48KHz of course. No need to convert to AC3.
So if you have a 44,1KHz track, transcode it to a higher bitrate (ideally 384kbps) with 48KHz samplerate and it should be then 100% DVD compliant.

i am doing that at the mo useing dvd2avi and tmpg but i would like 2 get ac3 sound just 2 get another notch on my belt

Unfortuantely I dont think there is a single util to do this


AFAIK the only way to do this is to convert the .mp2 to a stereo .wav, and change the sample rate to 48

Many sound editors will do this, SoundForge definitely does

Then import the .wav to SoftEncode, which will make the .ac3 track


Several other points:
This topic has been discussed several times in this forum, the threads on Lord of the Rings conversion have a more complete outline, or search on SoftEncode

The ac3 will be smaller than the .mp2 , and a lot smaller than the .wav

If you are doing NTSC, I believe that .mp2 track is not fully up to DVD specification as the only soundtrack, altho will play in many players anyway
