Hehehehe. Even at the time the movies were made such things were not possible. Especially in large cities. There are however backwoods areas in the US who still have party lines. So someplace, somewhere, such vulnerable systems might still exist. I don't think anything quite like what was shown in hackers was possible though. There were similar things though. Before Jobs and Wozniack started Apple computer they were building boxes in their dorm rooms that used tones based off a Captain Crunch prize whistle. It was found by another guy on campus to produce the exact same tones as the control systems for the major telco system in the area. Bill Gates may want to overthrow God, but Jobs and Wozniack almost actually got to talk to the guy. Unfortunatly he was unlisted and all they could get was some guy called the Pope. Boxing was most proliffic from the mid to late 60's right up till about the start of the 80's or possibly the late 70's. I have plans and schematics on a Zip somewhere from back in my early BBS days for about every type of telco box ever produced. Including plans on how to regulate and modulate the power off the tip and ring lines to let you run small appliances off the phone system. Remember the technicolor rainbow? I have ancient digital coppies of those lying around somewhere as well. Most of em are sadly outdated now though. :) There was a ton of artistic license taken in the movie hackers. But much of it was based off real life. The story line itself was fake though. ;) I have never seen or heard of Hackers 2 though. But I do have the original on VHS and DVD. There is an MPEG4 copy around here as well. Most of my hacking days are behind me though. Things have gotten more complex in alot of ways. They make hacking those old BBS to look like childs play. Hell I was logged on to a BBS one time and it randomly gave me admin access. Thank goodness for the admin that they were my friends.

I take that back a bit. There might still be some vulnerable payphone systems around. They are called fortress systems. You pick up the reciever and you hear a dial tone. That is usually an indicator of one of these systems. If you find one try dialing a number like the time. If you hear it ringing on the other end you have one solid. The trick is you can hear the person on the other end. They can't hear you though unless you put money in. Did you ever notice the nice metal shielding on the lines to the handset? wink wink

And because I know it is going to be brought up sooner or later no you can't do what Mathew Broadrick did in the movie "War Games" to get free calls either. Just sit back and check out the sweet puter systems. Check out that monitor man! 13 inches green monochrome! What's that system clocked at? 400Khz? It's like butta! 64K of RAM? Man what are you insane?! That's huge. hehehehehehehehehehe Aaaaah the nostalgia.

Just found this. No info on how to Phreak of course. But good nostalgia value. http://www.navyrelics.com/tribute/phonephreaking.html There you can read a bit about Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs and their influence known as Cap'n Crunch for the aforementioned prize whistle. You can even visit Cap'n Crunch's web site and read up about him! Fun stuff. Nother piece of nostalgia. You may have recently heard of the legal defeat of the 2600 while trying to defend DeCSS. 2600 was originally an underground magazine for the phone phreaking sceen. They got their name from the 2600hz tone well known to the early phone phreaks! How do I do it! :) We go from a movie on DVD to talking of phone hacking/security and back to DVD again! All perfectly seemless. All on topic and helping to better relate this thread to the forums purpose. hehe.

i was told that these tones used to work on phones but by the time the movies came out it was an old phone technique...is that true?
