View Full Version : internal routines, vStrip and DVDecrypter failed. VobDecoder worked!

I guess persistance pays off. I set about backing up The Royal Tenebaums and as you can see from the subject line several tries failed. I tried these on my Abit KR7A-133 based XP 1800 box.
I finally ripped the DVD on my PIII 850 using Vobdec. I don't know if it has to do with the machine or the rippers.
Just thought others would like to know that there may not be just one solution for ripping DVDs and may never be.
So here is my question, have any of you gone through this, I mean needing to try several different rippers to finally get the job done?

In what way exactly did DVD Decrypter fail? Any error messages? Anything said in the log?
Im asking this because all the rippers you mention use the vobdec code (along with other things), so it suprises me (to say the least!) that they all failed.

There were no error messages. The problem was it only ripped 5 of 7 vobs. I was real surprised as DVDecryper has always worked when the DVD2SVCD internal routines and v-Strip have failed. Without realizing it I encoded the 5 vobs that were ripped succesfully and they came out fine.
I don't know if it was because I moved to the PIII 850 and its DVD ROM or what.

So you probably used IFO mode then.
That recreates the VOB files to be 1GB each. It is quite normal therefore for it to produce less files than were originally on the disc...especially if you have enabled stream processing and stuff.
See.... I knew DVD Decrypter wouldnt have failed ;)

Let me clarify a bit. I did encode the movie on the XP 1800 box from a DVDcrypter rip, but to my memory (which is somewhat faulty as today is my 55th bday)it was short on time as if only 5 of the 7 vobs were ripped.
As you assumed it did produce and IFO. So to settle this I am going to rip this movie again and let you know if I can reproduce the behaviour.
It must be a daunting task to code a program that will work everywhere all the time on all hardware combinations using the same OS in this case XP.
My point in posting was that there must exist to many variables in complex OS like XP to accomplish such a feat.

For ripping, hardware isnt really an issue. It wouldnt just 'forget' to copy a few files. Its impossible. If _anything_ went wrong during the ripping stage, DVD Decrypter would have told you about it.
It has the best error reporting of all the rippers - and nobody can say anything against that fact!
Happy Birthday BTW :)

Point taken, I still intend to rip it again to see if I can reproduce the (better not say error) uhhh anomoly. What does an old fart like me have to do if not something like this?:D

OK, here are the results. Different DVD same movie, The Royal Tenenbaums.
It worked with all three rippers on my XP 1800 box. That is DVDecrypter, DVD2SVCD internal routines and v-Strip all ripped the same movie from a second and different DVD.
I can only conclude that the original DVD had some flaw/s that was/were finally over come when I resorted to my PIII and Vobdecoder. Perhaps the wind shifted or the moon was in a different phase or whatever, but in my mind the ripping must have been affected by the first Digital Versital Disc's physical condition, be they flaws such as scratches or perhaps something pressed in at manufacture.
Verdict: DVDecrypter has been found innocent of all charges.
