the Seagate 80G 7200 rpm ATA100 have dropped down in prices. Is this drive recommended for AV work?? Has anyone got opinions??

Hi,

I have two of them (not in raid), and I was able to capture three 20Gb avi files on the same drive without any dropped frame (with a PIII 700 cpu). Those drives are known to have a constant I/O bitrate from the center to the outside of the drive.

If I were you, I'd buy it!

Steph.

hi there thanks for the info, and so i went and bought it just b4 it jump 10% on price...

the bad news thought is that although is is rated a 80 Gb drive, windowsXp only recognised 76.3 Gb??? is this right???

and when i formatted the drive i got even less!

Oh no, not this again :)

It's all to do with what different people think a Giga Byte (GB) is.

Some people think it's 1024x1024 (like hard drive manufacturers) and other say it's 1000x1000.

So a quick sum, 76.3 x 1.024 x 1.024 = 80

Hope that makes sence.

thanks that helps;

seems wierd that my fujitsu 4.1 Gb had the full 4.1 Gb, and then the 2 seagates had 16.4 Gb for a 17.1, and the 80Gb only showed 76.3

Nobody reads the microprint on the datasheet that sais "*Capacity indicated is the maximum unformatted capacity and does not reflect the final formatted capacity of the drive."

:rolleyes: Stupid microprint...

man, the drive is recognized at the reduced size and then is even more reduced after formatting....

a loss of 4Gb is a huge amount and was not sure i should trust these sellers regarding the "newness" of the drive....thought maybe OS was just masking the bad sectors

is that reasonable??:D
