What Codec Do I Need For These ?!?!

I have some video files in .avi from a friend that i really want to watch, but when i try to open it i get an error message, but you can hear only the audio playing.

Only the audio will convert in TMPEG too, and only the audio will play! I have DivX on my computer, so what codec do i need to play these ?

the best bet would be to install ffdshow (http://sf.net/projects/ffdshow) which has many mpeg4 based video decoders built in. it's very probable that you'll be able to play your file when this filter is installed. make sure to run the configuration pannel (from the start menu) and check all the decoding formats under the 'codecs' section. once the movie plays, if you still want to know what kind of codec was used, you can bring the configuration panel again (from the tray icon) and go to the 'info' section.
