View Full Version : Am I overburning everytime I burn an SVCD?

Whenever image files are created w/ DVD2SVCD, I get ~800MB BIN files. I was under the impression that the CUE doesn't take all 800MB and put it the CD-R. Plus, I don't think a 700MB CD-R can hold that much, even with overburning, right?

Can anyone explain what's going on?

No, this is because SVCDs + VCDs are burnt in mode2. When you are burning in mode2, you have much more space than indicated on the cd. This is because mode2 eliminates the use of error correction, which takes up space when using mode1. So no, you really are not overburning.

A SVCD Disc made from an 700mb CD-r can contain 800mb of data. That's why the BIN's are 800mb, they still fit on a regular 700mb disc. That's because SVCD burning uses a different burning mode (2XA), like audio CD's do.

Well since upgrading to DVD2SVCD version 1.0.9 build 3, my first .bin files are 807megs. For some reason Nero will not let me burn them. Any ideas why there are now 807megs?

You may want to try VCDEasy to burn your images if they are over 800 Megs, but I will suggest Fireburner.:D

Right, the point here is that unlike with normal data cds you don't need to have redundant information. Cause if some bit is wrong or lost it does not render the complete cd useless. However, as with audio cd you might have some interpolation which will become recognicable and - due to my personal taste - annyoing cause I hate artifacts.

You should also take into account that - as there is no redundant information - a cdr burned in this mode is more subject to harm by scratches. That's why I always use expensive high quality cdrs for burning my SVCDs. As I've invested a lot of time encoding I really wanna keep all this work as long as possible...
