I have ripped the movie 12 monkeys several times using CladDVD, Smartripper, and vStrip, and each time i keep getting weird files. At first i was doing a usual gordian knot rip and used Smartripper, but then treid all the other rippers to see if it was the same all the way through.

There are 6 vob files, but the 4th vob is only 350 megs. All the other files are a gig, except for the last one. It's only the 4th file. Also, when playing the vobs in VaroDVD from my PC, all the files have english as the preset track...except for number 4! Number 4 is the directors comments.

When i made a DVD2AVI project, it decoded the AC3 perfectly..i can play it back in media player with no problems at all, but i cant convert it to MP3 in BeSweet or with AZID and LAME. It's baffling.

Now, i encoded the video seperately from the audio in gordian knot, and the video is perfect. However, i cant, nomatter how hard i try or what i do, make an MP3 file from that AC3.

It cuts off during the decoding process. I always end up with an MP3 thats short by 33 minutes. At a specific point, it always errors...and i get an incomplete MP3. Of course, i need the whole audio, since a DVD rip without audio is pretty pathetic.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with those dodgy VOB files.

What i'm asking is - has anyone else had this problem with this DVD? Also, if anybody has any suggestions as to what to do with the audio...it would be greatly appreciated.

Try Vob2Audio.
It may work.

Or try to open the ac3 with Soft Encode. Maybe, you'll see if the file has a problem.

Also, the 4th VOB should be the end of the first layer.
That's why it's so small.

But I don't know why the director's comment is the preset. I shouldn't have anything to do with your problem.

Have you tried converting the audio from the first layer and then the audio from the second layer? (in dvd2avi just load the last 2 vobs and extract the audio, is that the missing 33 minutes?)

I have heard of (but never actually seen one myself) DVD's being mastered in a way that the audio streams change ID's at a layer change. (though in the case I remember being discussed the audio switched from french to english or vice versa at the layer change and didn't give an error, maybe the error is caused by a change in bit rate of the ac3 at the change in stream? I think the directors commentary is usually encoded at a lower bit rate then the main movie's audio)

Hope this helps, please keep me updated as to weather or not this is/could be the problem, I would like to know if this is ever really the case.

im sure you'll all be glad to know i finally got the rip to work. Im not entirely sure how...but i did. Thats all that really matters in the end, isn't it?

I recall taking the AC3, and installing audio filters so i could play it in media player. to my surprise, the whole thing played perfectly! However, regardless of which AC3 decoding program i used, be it BeSweet or azid or any else of the multitude of programs i tried it wouldn't decode. I was seriously contemplating re-encoding the video and making myself an AC3 rip.

Then, i dont know...a miracle. Something happened. It worked anyhow, and now i have a copy of a great movie = )

Sorry to leave you all without any real information on how i did it..but i cant remember for the life of me.
