DVD2SVCD has an NTSC to PAL conversion option . Check it out (a few forums above this one). This program is fully automated, you load the apropriate IFO file and tell it how big you need to output to be and let it go..No user intervention apart from the initial setting up. Please note, I don't use the NTSC to PAL conversion option, but I do use this program regularly for re-encoding larger movies town to DVD5 size.

Hi Fletch,
I have been reading through the DVD2SVCD forum. I have never used this program as I am not really interested in burning SVCD's but DVD's only.
I cant seem to find the option to use this program for reducing a DVD to DVD5 size:(
Could you please enlighten me as to how it is done?;) I am always interested in giving new challanges a go.
Thanks & Happy Ripping.

Hi jmonfm,
I'll just outline re-encoding for a movie only DVD with no menus.. (just the movie set to autoplay)
Ok, you need to install the newest version of DVD2SVCD and also CCE2.5... Once installed, we start DVD2SVCD and you need to change a few default perameters -
1 Go to the MISC tab and select ADVANCED option . Also set default output folder to a dir where you have about 20gig H/D space free (make a dir so you know where all your outputted files will be)
2 Go to FRAMESERVER tab and select resize option to DVD - (IE: NO resizing) - we are making DVD after all !
3 Go to the ENCODER tab and set MULTIPASS VBR to 4 or 5 passes (obviously thats up to you how many you decide)
then click on the ADVANCED SETTINGS option (still in encoder tab) bottom right corner and select CLOSE ALL GOPS and select DVD COMPLIANT
4 Go to AUDIO tab - select DO NOT CONVERT AUDIO (This will allow us to retain the AC3 track)
5 Go to CD IMAGE tab and select DON't MAKE IMAGES
6 Go to BITRATE tab - change MAX to 8500 , MIN 300 , MIN AVER leave blank (untick if necessary) AVER MAX to 4500 .. Now this bit seems to confuse some people - you will see the CD size options - the first row will say (as default) BETWEEN 0-50 mins USE 1 CD SIZE 740...This is how we tell CCE what size output file we require to fit the DVD-R.. We need to change ALL of the CD SIZES to 4200 -(just highlight them and overtype what is already there) and then you need to change all of the
USE 1, USE 2 , USE 3 etc options to 1 (all 6 of them) . Now untick "WARN IF TOTAL BITRATE...." Also, 4200 is a safe size to choose, you can experiment and increase this to completely fill your DVD-R ..
7 Go to the CONVERSION tab and click the CD icon (or alternately you can browse to the IFO file). This will automatically load up the largest IFO file (which is gernerally the movie on the disc).. The movie length will load up and also the aspect ratio... Now , even if you do not have a widescreen tv yet, if the DVD is anamorphic (16:9 / Enhanced for 16:9 TVs.. whatever you want to call it) select the option "Anamorphic, no borders added" then hit the GO botton and select preview - click nect a few times and it will give you a preview of what you are encoding - check for any interlace problems (if you are doing PAL DVD's like me you should have very few) ... If all looks ok, hit encode and let it do the rest for you.. If there are interlace problems, there are different deinterlace options there to chose from (select one and it will preview the option you chose in realtime)
I cannot stress enough to print this FAQ out - (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21859) - although it pertains mainly to SVCD creation, it does explain in a hell of a lot more detail that I have what ALL the options mean)..
Depending on how many passes you selected and how fast your machine is, you will have to wait 6-8 hours for it to finish...
This program will also automatically run pulldown for you (if necessary) if it detects an NTSC stream...
You might get an error near completion when BBMpeg tries to mux the m2v and AC3 file as it is bigger than 4 gig in most cases (whch will be a problem if you are running FAT32 file system) , do not be concerned, just shut the program down at this point as it has already output the elements we need to create the DVD..
Browse to the ouptut dir you created and the only 2 files you are intersted in are our newly created (and resized) m2v file and the AC3 file... (In the case of NTSC movie , you will have 2 m2v files - the original (non pulldown version) and the pulldown version.. Use the pulldown version - it will be named PULLDOWN_...
You will notice that the combined size of the AC3 and video file equals the size we entered in the CD Size box in the BITRATE tab)..Import these suckers into your DVD authoring proggie (Maestro is recommended) and your set..
Any questions, feel free to ask... Obviously, there are MANY variations on this that I use as I like to keep menus/ extras / Comm Track and such but this will get you started..
Have fun

Fletch,
Thanks for taking the time to outline the process- much appreciated - I'll give it a go. Looks very interesting:D
The more I look at this DVD2SVCD the more it strikes me as a great programme. Maybe I'm just a lazy old dog but I wish there was a similar one for DVD2DVD 1 click & hey presto.
Cinders,
The NTSC to PAL option is a check box on the first page when you have pressed the disc button and it has loaded the main film Ifo file (middle top of page).
DVD2VCD you R_O_C_K

If you would prefer, you can rip just 1 chapter from the DVD to test first before committing to a long re-encode. Here's how -
When the movie is loaded up in DVD2SVCD, go to the conversion tab - click the drop down arrow next to movie length - it will bring up a box that has all the movie chapters listed - just tick the chapter you wish to test (untick the others) and then close the box down again. There will be a new time displayed now (just the chapter length you selected) - Proceed as normal. It should only take around 20 minutes to re-encode..
FletchMaybe I'm just a lazy old dog but I wish there was a similar one for DVD2DVD 1 click & hey presto.
This is a 1 click process after you initially set it up for the first time .. The program remembers all these settings for next time. Just load the ifo and hit encode.. Sorry, thats 2 clicks isn't it ? ;)

yes, easily. My guide allows you to use DVD2SVCD to create the elements you need to import into Maestro (movie only). As for combining it back into the original DVD structure and keeping the menu's and special features, refer to Trilight's fantastic guide for putting it all back together.
