I am wanting to capture some tv shows that i really enjoy watching. I am good when it comes to capturing the show and editing out all the commercials. I should mention that i would like to make them into SVCD's. I am using virtual dub to do the capping of the show and all the video editing (filtering and editing out commercials) and then i am going to be using the avi created by vdub and load it into Tmpg and make an svcd out of it.

The problem i have is what filters to use in virtual dub to clean up the video. Here is a screenshot of the type of video i am ending up with.

thanx in advance for any help

well, I do it like this way:
capture with resolution 352x576
codec: picvideo compression 20

after that I use filters:

vertical reduction 2:1
optimized 2d-cleaner settings 5 and y,x : 2
dynamic noise reduction setttings: 15
temporal smoother 3

I have been very pleased with result. I also clean up the audio noise from vhs-captures with cool edit 2000, cause it makes it perfect. You should of course capture with different resolution cause you are makin svcd and not vcd and skip the first filter.

http://www.lukesvideo.com/highresprocess.html might help you a bit.

As for avisynth, i have very good results with temporalsoften2.

some filters you could use are spatialsoftenMMX (avisynth), denoise 1.0 by tHE fISH (VDub - it's made using parts of Donald Graft's De-Flicker filter, I think), dynamic noise reduction (VDub).

Something you should use in any case (sometimes even in multiple instances) is temporalsmoother (VDub and avisynth).
