I have the strangest problem and this just started the other day. When I am encoding a movie I can do almost the whole thing with no problem. When D2S goes to write the .bin and .cue files my HD will disappear. I dont know why. Here is a log file from Shallow Hal that I did today:

You will notice that it worte the 1st .bin and .cue fine, when it goes to write the 2nd one it fails. When I go to look at the HD in this case drive G: its gone. Just not there. When I look in My Computer all my other HDs are there just not this one. When I restart my comp the HD is back and if I do crash recovery I get the same problem when it trys to write the .bin and .cue. Does anyone have any ideas on this? BTW I am using Win XP.

How extremely weird is that :confused: I don't have a clue, sorry :(

I couldn't do shallow hal either. I believe it's chapter 28 which the first couple mins are the end of the movie and the rest is extremely black with credits, etc. CCE would crash. I'm willing to bet that'd be the problem.

as to your specific problem I'm not sure...but for now I'm thinking it's shallow hal. Anyone done a succesful rip of this title yet?

@dvd2svcd
I know I dont know WTF is causing it, its one of the weirdest things that I have ever had happen to me.

@mrbass
I dont think that it has anything to do with Shallow Hal. I was having the same problem yesterday when I was converting some Sex and the City Episodes.

The only thing that I can think of that I did recently that might cause some trouble is that I moved my DVD drive to the Primary IDE slave spot ( so that windows would use it in DMA, for some reason it just stopped runing DMA in the Seconday IDE master spot) and then I put that HD to the Secondary IDE master. I will try to mess with some settigs tonight when I get home to see if I can get anything to work.

Hi Jason28,

is this a Toshiba SD-M1612 DVD drive? This bug seems to be spreading around with this drive - recently, I heard some people reporting this error of loosing the ability to use the DMA mode all of a sudden.

I myself have this DVD drive and did not encouter this behaviour so far.

But to your problem, did you jumper the drive correctly - switching it from master to slave - I know it is common knowledge but I forgot this in the past also and got some troubles. Also, you have to use the correct plugs for the master and the slave devices and you cannot switch them as this can also cause troubles with DMA-100/133 cables or if they are too long.

Just a guess,
Gerti

Hi Jason28. I had a similar thing happen to me recently (although for a different reason). If gerti67's advice doesn't solve the problem, then you might try this. In Device Manager remove the IDE Controller for that IDE Channel. Reboot, and then upon rebooting, the IDE Controller will be reinstalled. You may have to reboot again after that, but that's how I got my Optical Drives back (it was my optical drives that disappeared, and not my hard drives).

Jason28, If what gerti and manono idea's dont help out try doing a few things. First make sure none of the hard drive cables are loose or going bad also update your bios to the latest version, set all ide ports in the bios to auto. If this dosen't help and the other things dont as well i'm guessing the motherboard is flaking out on ya. if thats the case go to newegg:) and buy one for like 60.00 shipped.

Also you might wanna check for viruses all of these ideas are things i'd try out i'll ask around tho and if i come up with some more things i'll post them.
