My mpg file wrecked itself!

Incredible but true,

i used to have a mpg files (name does'nt matter) that was fully readable.
I stocked it on my hd and now, suddenly, some frames in the end are broke and i can't read the end of the file, playerS are just looping on the last 5 readable seconds...


It may have something to do with the fact that i'm sharing it with P2P apps and then some upload may have kill frames...

Do u got any idea?


note : i tried several media and dvd players and even make a few copy of the file with same results.

i don't know if this will help, but my mpg will usually get corrupted when i defrag my computer, unless i put them in the exclusion list.

Are you sure you don't want to rephrase that to "my HD deteriorates by itself!"?

I was referring to the subject line of the original post ... it is very unlikely a file wrecks itself indeed, rather your HDD will start getting bad blocks with time ... and that might damage your data.
In a similar way, just defragging your drive is unlikely to do damage to any files, as long as the hard- and software work properly.

CORRECT : i did defragment my hd the day before my file wrecked himself.


WRONG : the HD is only 12 days old! so it can't be a sector probe.

anyway broken sector occurs many more dysfonctionnements than wrecking an mpg file (even if it's spiderman third part :) )


Well, i think i'll just stop defrag...

don't stop defraging your hd, if you are using Diskeeper, just put all your movies into a folder and add it to the exclusion list so it won't get defrag; over time your computer will start to lag if you don't defrag your hd.

a file wont wreck itself, its either because of something the user did or a hardware issue. Defraggin has never messed a mpeg file of mine up and others that i know of. Like smiller667 stated if your software and hardware on the machine are running properly that kind of thing just dosen't happen:)

and since i'm bored and feel like making guesses on what it could of been, i'd say this when you defrag the information goes in to memory then is written to disk. My guess is you have some type of bad memory or loop holes in your memory which caused the data to be lost while it was defraging. You could download some software to test the memory or other harware parts there are tons of stress tests for free on the web.
