View Full Version : Speed of DVD2SVCD

9th July 2002, 12:51
Hi All ,
It took me more than 20 hrs to convert a 3 hours DVD movie
to svcd ! ,so I'm wondering if there is something to do to make the
operation faster ..
here is what the log file says about CCE speed :

Closing program
CCE Max Speed: 0.720
Video Encoding finished.

is it too slow ? what is the max speed I can get?

please not that i have :
Inte Pentium 2 GHz
512 MB of Ram
Windows XP Pro.

How can I know if my 512 Ram is not just a number !& that I'm really using a 512 mb of Ram ?

Waiting for your support.

Best Regards

This issue has been dicussed numerous times so please do a search and read up.

The speed is very dependant on how u encode. A 4 pass VBR will take longer than a CBR. Also if u apply filters like Temporal Smoother or choose another resize method like Bicubic the encoding speed will suffer.

Take a look at the Q&A, no. 4.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21859

The best advice I can give is to try different setting and test the quality of the encoding. If u find a CBR encode is good enough for you then don't do a 4 or 5 pass VBR as the encoding time will increase.

I do CBR encodes with a video bitrate above 2000 and get OK results in my view. I can do an 90 min. movie in 1-2 hours on a AMD 1.4Ghz and 512MB DDR-Ram.

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but this is your problem: "Intel Pentium 2 GHz" - Specifically the Intel portion of it. I assume this is the first wave of P4s (the new wave is noted as P4 2A). The new wave is based on the 0.13micron process and has doubled the L2 cache. This makes the second wave quite a bit better than the first. However, neither chip can compare to AMD.

If you want you can try these settings and see what you think. They are what I use for all of my movies.

On the audio tab set your audio to 192 or 224. You DONT need to do the audio downsample as most DVD players can play 48KHz.

On the frameserver tab select TemporalSmoothing with a stregth of 2 and a radius of 1.

On the bitrate tab set the max bitrate to 2500 and the min bitrate to 300, uncheck min average and set max average 2350.

On the encoder tab select CCE with 1 pass VBR. Make the q factor 5 and set Image Quality Priority to 5.

With these settings and an Athlon XP 1800+, I can do a 2 hour movie in about 3 hours and the quality is some of the best that I have seen.

You should be able to get something faster the CCE speed that you got above with a P4 2 GHz. A friend of mine has the older P4 1.9 and he get speeds of 1 to 1.2.

I want to try your settings Jason28 but what I want to know if what the quality like with this settings, in a scale from 1 to 10 what will you rate your movie with this settings?

10=Almost dvd quality
5= some how good
1= Sucky!

Thanks for sharing this settings :D

Did he not already mention that the quality is some of the best he's seen... wouldn't that imply a 9 or 10?

Some how I can't belive this, I got the same proccesor 1800 XP, 512 MB DDRam, 40 GB 7200 RPM, etc....
Whit your settings and my box this is the time it will take:

Looks like on my last post the pic didin't make it!
Any way the time to encode the movie (1:45 min) with the settings used by Jason28
was 7:50:02
So I was expecting to see something like 3 to 4 hours on the movie I was going to try to encode, what Jason28 didin't mentioned is if what kind of movie was he talking about, was it a film? Anime?
I was trying to encode "Spraggan".
So Jason28 any input will we welcome cause I was using VRB 4 pass, but now that you mentioned only 3 hours vs 8-9 I am really looking foward to that. :o
My Specs are:
XP 1800
40 GB 7200 rpm HD
512 DDR
:o

If you would have read the forum rules, you would have seen that attachments must be verified by a mod before viewing (I assume you put the pic up as an attachment).

As for the speed/settings - I find them hard to believe too, which is why I plan to run some tests.. you should do the same before doubting.

Yea, I wanted that pic to fast, eh?
And by the way Ultimate Im never doubted Jason28, just wanted to know some facts about how he did it.
And didin't I just mentioned I did some test?
I guess you didin't read my whole posting did you?

UltimateDBZ

lol, yeh a bit too fast there ;)

I will post my results (whenever I get around to testing), and you post yours... then we can compare with Jason's and see the differences.

ramutan

:sly: I will as soon as I get the results, that is the reason why you need 2 computers, one to keep working (if that apply's) and the other one to play and ripp.:D

Well I dont know what to tell you if you use the settings that I wrote there you should get an encode time of about 3 hours or so. If you use 4 pass VBR then you are going to get a longer encode. The key to the whole thing is using 1 pass VBR. Here is a log file of Shallow Hal that I encoded today.

As you can see I started it at 3:16 and I finished it (well almost finished it) at 5:33. If we make that 5:36 to make it eaiser to figure out the time you will see that it only took me 2 hours and 20 mins to encode this movie. The movie length is 113 mins. Like I said above this is very good quality. If rated it on a scale of 1-10 (10 being a DVD) I would give it an 8.

:D I going to start this post repply by saying that you where right,
I did encoded one movie with your settings (actually 2 movies)
but for some weird reason on my faster Box (XP 1800) the movie I went for was going to take almost 8 hours; but then I encoded a different movie with my second box (Duron 800 MHz) and I was surprise that even on this slow machine it took me 4:10 min to finish the whole movie!
So I did asked about quality and this movie was already encoded once with VBR 4 pass, so I did a comparison and I'm a beliver now.:)
Like I said before Jason28 thanks for sharing this settings! :D

Lets wait ans see the results from Ultimate, but Im already doing this settings for now on. I didin't see any difference on the movie
encoded on VBR 4 pass and the one with VBR one pass.
The only thing I can't figure out is the deal about my faster box,
Why is it taking more time?

One last question Jason28:

Did you also use this settings for animation??

Jason28
11th July 2002, 01:37
@ramutan
I am not to sure why it would take you that long to encode on that machine. I would try to reinstall D2S and see if that fixes it for you. If that dosent then you can try to format your HD, and reinstall everything and see if that makes a difference.

I have used them for Cowboy Bebop and a few other anime. The quality is very good there as well. I would reccomend that you try out a few chapers and see if you like it. The only problem that I had with this setup is that sometimes the .bin and .cue files would come out to be too big. If you do a search you will find the post. I would reccomend reading it as it will save you some time if anything like that ever happens to you.

11th July 2002, 08:42
Well, I went back to figure out what went wrong on my attemp to use my faster Box for encoding with your settings and I didin't found anything in particular.
The only thing I will hate to do is to reformat my drive again (already did to solve sync problems)and I just getting good results.

:o Update :o
While I was writing this posting my Box just finished "Shrek" using your setting and I'm really happy to report that my encode time is only 3:50 minutes.:p
Looking at the quality I will agree with you about been a 8 on quality on a scale of 10 to 1.
So any way thanks Jason28 for the "heads up" on this settings and most of all on the time it saves.

by the way, as a last question:

Do you use the default settings for the bit-rate?
some how I can see that my first disk got a little bit more of quality.

UltimateDBZ
11th July 2002, 16:55
I think Jason did mention above that he uses the default bitrate settings, but just changes all the cd sizes to 800. That's what I do as well, and it seems to produce good quality, so I'm not about to change it :)

Sounds interesting, but aren't you wasting CD space (which spells additional quality) with it? How will you make sure your movie fits onto one CD proper?

When you encode vbr 1pass, the final size won't be predictable exactly? Hence you risk wasting space or overshooting one or two CDs, don't you? Why not choose 2pass and keep the other settings. This way, the file will fit exactly with no slack.

UltimateDBZ
11th July 2002, 23:12
Ah, I see where you're coming from now, and you're right. But I've never done 1pass VBR, I always do at least 2 pass, and usually 4 or 5pass. The way I see it, right now we're discussing ways to improve encoding speed, not exactly worrying too much about quality or output size specifics.

Jason28
12th July 2002, 01:41
@ux-3
You are right sometimes the file size is a bit off and it dosent fill the entire CD. I havent really had any trouble with it though. If someone does have trouble they can change the q factor to 1 and see if that fixes the problems. :)

ux-3
12th July 2002, 14:48
Well, the way I would see it would be this: Doing an additional pass will add less encoding time and more quality. Redoing a single pass will have the opposite effect.

The way I cut my encoding time in half is simple: I do most encodes on two CDs and choose the resolution to fit that 2 CD size, unless a single CD is a must (i.e. TV episodes). This is done in 5pass, (sometimes TS) on two computers and it DOES cut the time in half.:D

Since most encodes are done in a night, they can take passes till the sun rises. I frequently encode to DVD resolution and I find that the results are much better (on standalones) than I had ever thought. Mind though, this is CCE! Though my average bitrate is about 2000+, the key seems to be to have max at 4000. Or perhaps I am just undemanding with the mosquito noise or whatever else might bother others, who knows...?
