If I was to rip an entire movie to my hard drive , then run the VOB files through ReMpeg2 to bring down the bitrate , and then through SpruceUp to convert them back into VOB's , and then swap the Video_TS.ifo and BUP files from the original rip back into the new VIDEO_TS folder that SpruceUp made. Would doing this keep the original menu? Or will all the chapter points and pointers be off? Is there a way to fix them if they are?

I found through excruciating trial and error "experaments" that what will play back on the stand-alone DVD player, or on my console,
(the Playsation 2, the single pickiest laser reader ever made, back-up games have to be on a particular brand of media, or they skip, some "failures" worked on the DVD player, but not in the console, that was a VOBU "pointer" thing...makes anything that works on the console a complete success, by default, my "acid test")is harder than I ever thought it would be. GOOD! I thrive on challenges to my intellect, brain bending puzzles with a purpose.

You can downsize DVD video by "Stream Stripping", I use DVD Smart Ripper for that, but then ALL THE IFO's are beyond saving, DELETE them and start over. Use the stream processing feature to remove the stuff you dont need. DVD uses one m2v, or mpeg2 video stream, and eight audio streams, I think, in total, plus the info stream called "others", don't strip that one, you'll never get it to play, TRUST ME, and you only need "Track 1", usually always "english", otherwise known as "0x80". The others are alternate language, director's commentary, ect.

SMART RIPPER STREAM PROCESSING: leave the top 2 and the bottom one checked.

This lightens up a DVD by about 20%, but ruins the IFO's. Now you have to create new IFO files using "IFO-EDIT", create new IFO's, then "GET VTS SECTORS" to correct that part, and then run
"VOB EXTRAS" making sure to correct the VOBU pointers....

And that will fly in any player.

OR: You can just try whatever, pray for play, do it the hard way.....

Here's four things to help you, IFO EDIT...IFO Update....Imaging Tool (builds an image file of the FORMATTED DVD, also has a mux/demux feature I use) and ISO buster. Good Luck.
