View Full Version : MPEG 2 Encoding Problem

While encoding to DVD compliant MPEG-2, the resulting file has what look like lines that stream from the edges of objects that move. For example, on a live music scene when there's a close-up of the guitar fretboard there are streaking lines across it as it moves. In some cases the outside outline of objects is broken by the lines to create an indenting effect. The effect is worse the faster it gets. Also, on scenes that have sudden quick edits (such as the intro to ER) there are lines too.

I've tried different settings in the motion detect, but it seems to be there for them all.

This does not occur when encoding to VCD or SVCD compliant streams.

Anyone any ideas?

Also, does anyone know of a really good detailed guide for the program?

Thanks

Dave

...and your problem is something different from interlace artifacts?

I don't know. What are interlace artifacts? I'll try to describe what the nature of the lines is:

Imagine you've a sheet of white liquid with a line of dark liquid on top perfectly defined. Now imagine taking the tip of a sharp object and running it through the line. It would make the point of intersection 'streak' into the white. Now imagine that this is happening all along the edge of objects as they move.

I hope that gives you an idea of the type of problem.

Thanks

Yeah, that's it. And thanks to a previous reply I got the clue and did some experimenting in TMPGEnc. Its now solved and I'm getting great results. Thanks all for the help. I think I'm going to have to do a lot of reading on this subject!!

well dude , that's nothing but normal, DVD compliant MPG2 IS interlaced.
If u attempt to burn a non interlaced DVD u'll get some big surprise : bad quality.

So how do you get a good encoding WITH interlace within TMPEGenc? All I did was de-interlace using the even field filter, which produced reasonable results....but if its possible to improve it I'd like to do so! Is it worth trying out all the different deinterlace options that appear in the deinterlace screen and see which work best, or does anyone already know which one does?

I'm doing the work on two machines, each one with a different gab source. One's using he DC10plus and the other the Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge. For the DC10plus I have to first convert the grab file to DV using Studio 7 in order for TMPEGEnc to recognise the file.

Also, can anybody point me in the direction of a good explanation of interlace/deinterlace so I can appreciate what we're talking about!!

Thanks all.

Dave.
