In the german c't magazine there's a whole 2 side article about nearly all topics in this forum
Well nothing new for the forum users but this could lead to some new XCD... users and some more newbie questions in here.
The article is not online, but here are the related links:
http://www.ct.heise.de/ct/urls/
Seiten 190 bis 191: 'Xtragroße CDs' - Übergroße CDs (Praxis)
http://www.ct.heise.de/ct/02/14/links/190.shtml
Softlinks: "Xtragroße CDs"
Could do an pdf if wanted

Could do an pdf if wanted ... please create a PDF of the article once it appears. Thanks so much for the links.

which ct issue? I have most of them and I have a scanner (leaving this place soon though and then I'll be without one for a week).. however and send it to me so i can upload it ? would bother me as it breaks copyright law.. making a scan/copy for personal use is one thing.. publishing it on the web quite another

And sharing with "friends" is another thing!

the fair use circle is very tighly defined these days.. outside your own family can already be problematic.. and you don't see me share stuff of questionable nature anywhere, do you?

I agree with Doom9.
Let's not violate any copyright laws just to see this article. If you want to, do it in a less public place.

here's an abbreviation of the article.
it's entitled "Xtragrosse CDs" over 2 pages. It starts explaining why you can put more data on (S)VCDs than regular data CDs. It also states that there are 2 formats trying to use the additional space: MCF and XCD (link to both sourceforge homepages) but that beside the specification there was not much else atm. Then there's an introduction to mode2 cd make including a few examples, some info for the filter and the dat extension, tips how to get things working on linux (not very detailed imho) and a big screenshot of nah's gui showing how to put avis and mode1 files onto a CD, and another shot showing nero about to burn a .cue/bin. Then there's the paragraph entitled "Ade AVI" explaining that AVI is more error sensitive than (S)VCD and that's why there's MCF, including an overview of some of its possibilities and the note that it will be a long way till we get there. Then they mention that the ogg media format (ogm... vakor will love to hear that;) makes a very good impression (including a link to my ogg guide:). And in the conclusion they mention that atm it's a bit early to start archiving your movies using these tools as new versions might not be downward compatible and that chances of hardware adoption are not that great since the industry is more into supporting DVD-R which offers a lot more space. Then they have one of thexe "extra" boxes explaining what mode1, mode2form1 and mode2form2 sectors contain. the softlink to the article yields a link to the mode2 cd maker homepage, a direct download link to the riff cd xa filter, a link to nah's site and a link to ubi's mode2cd maker gui (the one I use in my guide).

Thanks doom9 for taking the time :)
So the article is "not bread not butter" - well at least they try to documentate the "progress" of development.
They'd be better off by simply mailing some of the developers, but well, c't doesn't need to do a proper research (they should have known that there actually _IS_ a tool to create the backup-files for XCD, thus making XCD a stable container with some future playback filters which can use them....) ;)
Thanks again for giving a summary of the article!
Best regards,

no problem.
it seems that when it comes to DVD ripping CT is afraid to get in touch with people.. I've never heard that they contacted any programmer even in previous articles and they've mentioned my site many times over without ever trying to get in touch..
thx for the info doom9. interesting indeed.
cheers

i'm "a bit" into my exams atm and so have not much time to do anything else.
the article is in the current german issue (c't 14/02 - 1.7.2002 page 190/191).
perhaps i'll manage to scan and pdf it the next days - hoping no c't editor scans this forum *g* - think i will just mail it to who is interested in
like i said in my first posting (confirmed by doom's posting) it's nothing new for readers of this forum.

I wanted to tell you something that would maybe infringe copyrights, so i cant do this here in this public forums :D .... or maybe we can start to talk via mail ( christianhjw at powerdivx dot com ) or ICQ ( 146194045 ) .
Thanks ;)
P.S. : I guess you know what i want .... :D
