It works for ogg and shouldn't be problematic with future spec versions since the idea was to store the first 2kb or so of any stream in a backup header - from an ogg we store the first 64kb...

So if you take that quote quite literally, basically the backup tool makes a copy of the first 64kb of the file and saves it as a separate file in mode1. Even without a "tool" it's very easy to do that using simple dos programs. But of course you do this at your own risk.

But I'm sure Koepi's tool will make a spec compliant file(name and structure as defined in XCD spec). Anyone could copy the first 64Kb of a file but then how will an XCD player/dshow filter determine what the file is for? That's the point of the tool.

The point isn't to make a spec compliant XCD, the point for this chap was so that he could get everything off his hard drive so he can return it and someday when the tool is released, he would still have everything he needs to make his XCD.

Besides, the only thing I can see that the spec would differ by is filename and subdirectory, either of which, since the source code is released, is quite easy to alter.

You're mistaken, TheXung.
The backup file has a clear structure - and you need the data from the original file for it. Just head over to http://xcd.sourceforge.net/ and read it up.

The release of a backup-enabled proggi is not in my hands - nah has the source code for some days now and it's up to him whether he includes it or not.

Koepi

BTW, does the DX-Filter already support the usage of such backup-files??

I will leave on saturday for about 5 weeks, first 2 weeks of holiday  and then 3 weeks of work in foreign:(

Possible to get beta of the xcd backup creator and a playback filter supporting such backup-files??

So I could continue my work on the XCDit interface.

Raist
P.S. @ avih I'm still working on a menu-system for XCD, hopefully I can post something more before I leave on saturday.

@raistlin2k: thx for your work, i'm looking forward to see what u've done.

the backup creator is written by koepi, and seems to be working (theoretically). the filter doesn't yet support usage of the backup/header file. I'm the one delaying the work due to various reasons. some private, some not.

we didn't release the backup-creator so far since we didn't have the chance to see if any problems arise with our spec, protection scheme and/or the implementation. it would definately be unwise from us to let u ppl use it when we didn't have the chance to check it out 1st.

i've been talking to dext lately, and we should get back on track soon.

sorry for the delay i cause.

cheers
avi

avih i really thank you for letting us know you are still alive!!!
I was worried for the lack of updates lately, i hope it isn't anything bad going on with you and I wish you luck for everything in the name of (potentially) millions of people who in the future may be grateful for you work!!!!
THANX you also to you DeXT, Koepi and of course Doom9!!!!!
