View Full Version : Don't want to replicate or pre-master

I have followed the thread that has been locked out, which was
dealing with the subject of pre-mastering DVD 9.

I am not into pre-mastering or replication. The only thing I need
to do is make backups of both the layer seperately.

Can anybody please enlighten me.

Thanks.

If you're just wanting to split them across 2 DVD's instead of re-authoring or re-encoding (it sounds like this is what you want), then you should check the guides here on the site. There is a guide that explains how to do this HERE. (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-2dvdrs.htm)

Thanks for the prompt reply Trilight !

The guide you have refered to, does the job of splitting the
contents and I guess, re-assigning chapter information on both
of the disks.

What I require to do is, not to modify anything whatsoever
with the contents, well nothing other than unmacro and region free
stuff. And still backup both of the layers seperately for the future, when I hope we will be able to burn dual layer DVD 9.

Keep in mind, this is not just a dream, even if it is, DVD 5 was
a dream too .

Please enlighten me.

Thanks.

Well, if that's what you're wanting to do, then just use SmartRipper with the "backup" option. It will remove the protection and make a full backup of all contents. The layer change is assigned during the authoring process and I'm not sure there is a way to duplicate that. If in fact affordable dual-layer DVD-9 burning becomes available someday, I'm quite sure they will include an option to have the burn span to the next layer.

Of course, I personally feel that all of this is a moot point anyway. By the time something like that becomes available to the consumer (which I still doubt), you may not even like that movie anymore or won't want it done that way since it's old technology! I have no doubt that we will eventually have the ability to author and burn to high-definition media. What you're proposing will be an outdated idea then.

I was talking to a good friend a number of years back when the 486DX 100Mhz was introduced and the Pentium 60Mhz was on the horizon. I was not sure what I wanted to do and thought I might wait. Of course, by then, something new would be on the horizon! He told me something I still believe in to this day. Technology moves at such a fast pace that you eventually have to make a decision to "jump in" somewhere and enjoy the ride! If you do it too soon, it may not be perfected yet. If you do it too late, you spend money on outdated technology. Such is the delimna of the technology consumer. Wait if you like, but my advice would be to enjoy DVD-5 now and let the future take care of itself. :)

Thanks for the reply, mate.
Will give the idea shot and get back to you.
Let me put it this way, just like the bunch of members of the forum,
back tracking their childhood memories via their favourite programs, I too will not be leting mine go by.

Thanks again and best regards.

I grabed a Dual Layer DVD-9 and ran it as per Trilights
suggestion, which was to BACKUP the dvd in SmartRipper
and finally, I got the same SINGLE VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders.
The property of the folders is 7.9 GB, thou the audio folder
is blank.

To my understanding, I should get two different vts and ats
folders for two different layers. Am I right ? Well, this is what
I need to do.

If yes, then how do I backup two layers seperately ?

Anybody please.....

you can't rip them separately.. no ripper supports that (and may never do so since the MPAA isn't that stupid to not realize what such a feature would be all about.. )

after the ripping process you have to re-create 2 dlt images, one for each layer.. there are dvd image generation tools that can do this (maybe with some tampering) but obviously I've never done that so I wouldn't know how to go at it.

Thanks for the reply Doom9 !

If I went into re-creating 2 dlt's then I'm into replication
and/or pre-mastering.

I'm down to earth person who can't afford those expensive tools.

Thanks again guess I'm out of luck.
