First I would like to thank derrow for allowing me to post when the forum would not let me even after 3 days.

My problem is with trying to split a dvd (~8gb) onto two dvds using the doom9 guide: http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-2dvdrs.htm

I have also throughly read/followed: http://mpucoder.dynodns.net/derrow/menuidiot.html

The Dvd I am trying to rip to two dvds has only Video_TS, VTS_01 and
VTS_02. I ran ifoedit to split and follow the guide. I end up getting the following error message: DVD Warning:Could not open a file on the DVD disc

So, I added all the VTS_02 files (not just the VTS_02.ifo VTS_02.bup VTS_02.0.vob) back into the first disk, which now included the split VTS_01 and the VIDEO_TS files, re-ran the ifoedit (without resplitting of course) and wound up with exactly the same error.
"DVD Warning:Could not open a file on the DVD disc". Now this makes
no sense at all since all files are on disk one, except for the split
sections of the movie itself. This does not appear to be a titleset
problem. What next?? (BTW, after I ran DVD Decrypter, I used ifoedit
in the unsplit files to play the movie and as expected it ran
perfectly. The problem must be somewhere in the ifoedit manipulation
but I followed the directions exactly and cannot figure out where the
problem lies).

Have you manually coppied the VTS_01_0.VOB file into the new directory - as ifoedit copies the film files from VTS_01_1.vob. The '_0.vob' file is usually accessed before the film (but is not part of the film) hence the could not find file error. I hope this may cure your problem.
Happy ripping

well now i have a new problem

i am using a pioneer 104 dvd writer on a firewire connection. Primodvd does not recognize the drive. I built the image file but when I drag it to Primodvd, first I get "no dvd recorder found" and then I get the file is a "bad file".

any ideas??

JohnCage,
I have never used a fire wire connection so I am no expert. What I gather about it is that it is a serial bus protocol which uses a layered transport system (ethernet styleeeeeee!). I am thinking that this could be your problem. I know that when I tried to upgrade my system by putting in a PCI to 2 x IDE card to seperate my many drives ( 1 x dvd-rw, 1 x cd-rw, 1 x dvd rom & 1 x HDD) to single IDE ports, it caused so many problems with writing dvd's & cd's that I took it out and went back to the motherboard 2 x IDE ports as master & slave again. So I am guessing here, that writing drives don't like any kind of protocol between feed & drive ?!?!

Failing that - have you tried VOB Instant CD/DVD as your writing software? My Pioneer rw drive came with it as a package.

As I say, I don't know much about this type of connection - so I could be talking a load of rubbish. Hopefully someone with a brain cell in this department may chip in with a few comments:o
Happy Ripping.

@JohnCage It is most likely PrimoDVD's problem, just how old is that anyway? Prassi sold out to Veritas a year ago, and I think your drive may be newer than that. Try updating to RecordNow Max. You can get a 30-day trial version at http://www.stompinc.com/trial/index.phtml?hcd
If that fails, there are other demos you can try, see http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/forum/burnlinks.html for a list of links.

@jmonfm - you musta got a bad card, my DVD system has 5 HD (total capacity 330G), a DVD reader, and a DVD writer. All get along fine with 4 IDE channels.
