View Full Version : Don't bother trying RealVideo on XCD I guess...

Well now I could've sworn that I once created a successful image of a realmedia file using mode2cdmaker. It was a really early version but at any rate, due to this I had this pretty little idea all set up in my head. I was gonna have 2 .smil files, one named Dub.smil and the other Sub.smil, stored in mode 1 and a subdirectory containing a subtitle file in mode 1 and 2 audio and 1 video file in mode 2.
It uh.. didn't work. Not all is lost, as dat2file still converted it back properly, but it isnt the pretty little ideal realvideo xcd that I had hoped for. I'm aware Real isnt covered by XCD since its a closed and radically different format from avi, mcf, and ogm, but just here to confirm.

In the filter readme it's clearly stated that RM is a format currently not supported. If RealNetworks would have developed a DirectShow filter for RM content there would have been no problem at all. But that's not the case. They want you to use their crappy player to play every RM file.
However, it has been said in this forum that you can read RM content through WinAMP using Tara Video plugin. However when I tried it, it didn't work.
So to put it clear: use only DirectShow-enabled content. So don't try to burn MP4 or any other format currently not suppoted through DirectShow.

@Rasi: could you explain how did you test it? I had RP8 installed when i tried it but it could not recognize the file.
Of course I'm talking about reading RM straight from a XCD.

I think that the only possibility is to read the real files from cd with a separate program and then play the files from hd.
