View Full Version : Alien Subtitles

"Alien subtitles" are subtitles which contain only a few lines in an entire movie. As Aliens take their time to show up, the first line occurs way into the movie (Which human do we eat first - burp?)
These are classic lines you would like to get, regardless of other subtitles, since you are very likely not well versed in klingon or alike.

I found that the menu, which is offered before ripping starts, usually has a few languages with empty boxes. They are languages which also have audio tracks. (On subtitle only languages, there is no need for more subtitles). Find your language box without a text in it. There should also be another 1 or 2 boxes of the same language with text in it (for subwoofer victims etc.)

Uncheck those normal boxes you don't want, then check the empty one (only). This will produce an error message, but the box will be selected with a number, not a checkmark. The number is visible once you click on another box. Now press for the next subtitle. The prog will scan till the aliens say something. (Dinnertime!) Then you will get a check mark in the box and the Subtitles will be propperly ripped. At this time, you could also select other languages.

Hope this helps...also helpful for "humanoid" alien movies.

Are you talking about 'Forced Subtitles' ?

Would this cover the sentences spoken in Elvish in The Lord Of The Rings? So you can watch the whole movie without subtitles and only when Aragorn speaks to Legolas/Arwen the subs are shown?

I'm trying to do the same thing with xXx, at the begining there's asome russian with subtitles but the rest of the movie is english, however when I use subtitle ripping the entire movie has sub titles. Anyone know the procedure for doing this correctly?

Standing in the woods, looking for the trees?

Well, the procedure above works with 109b3, dunno about the later builds.

Is what you wrote above translated form another language? The grammer does not make sense to me, I tried to follow it but I get lost along the way. It sounds like you are describing using the stream ripper to do this which I've tried with smartripper and it still doesn't put subtitles into the movie unless you use riping subtitles in DVD2SVCD, but then the titles apear throughout the movie. Have you tried it with movies other than aliens?

This is all done in DVD2SVCD.

Works on Krauts too...

Krauts, elves, mindreaders...

My DVD drive is not on the same machine as DVD2SVCD so I have been using smart ripper, I'll have to put it into that machine and try using the built in DVD ripper.

Ok I'm trying this with the internal ripping routines now, what menu are you talking about? Subtitles? conversion?

As I said, the menue before the ripping starts. Apparently, you didn't yet try starting the conversion. There is a menue which pops up before the ripping starts (109b3?).(not before you hit "start conversion", if you get picky on grammar and meaning).

Do you mean after Rip and Covert? I think this menu you are talking about is not present in the newest version which I'm using, I'll try the version you have if it's still available for download.

Ok I reconize that menu but there are only two lines in the subtitles menu on the DVD I am working with (Triple X), french and english. Both produce subtitles throughout the entire movie. I don't know if I've ripped it incorrectly or if this DVD just does not use the same method as others.

I'm having the same problem as tankd0g with XXX. I want to use DVD2SVCD, but how do I get just those English subtiles and not all of them?

Can't you just use the "next subtitle" button until they appear then select those alien subs ?

Thanks for your reply. I can't find "next subtitle" button anywhere within the program.

Conversion tab.

@ executioner and tankd0g:

XXX has 32 "forced" subtitles embedded in the English subs stream. The way I see it:
1. Open Subrip 1.14,check: Action, save as BMP. Open the ifo DVD2SVCD made, the program will say "Closed Caption detected (1X)".
2. Go to Global Options, check "forced subtitles only"
3. Rip them and save the text file.
4. Compare these to the ones DVD2SVCD made, and delete all that you don't want. I think that this will work.
5. If you use selectable subs, run crash recovery. If perm, you have to start all over.

And don't post twice :)

This is one of the first things I tried but it produced an error after I deleted some of the subs, maybe this is just a b-tard of a movie, the subtitles are really not that important in it anyway.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

So in order for this to work, I need to tick the box to rip subtitles and select English correct?

Then while the ripping begins, I'm presented with a pop-up box which will allow me to select the subtitles again. This is where I deselect the main English subtitle, but check off the others that have the English subs when a foreign language is spoken correct?

@Executioner:
You are right. With the next button the next subtitles of every stream are shown. This way you can proof if you have checked the subtitles, you want.
Best to try out!

@executioner:

are we talking about the NTSC or the PAL version? My post was about the NTSC version, which has only English(Forced subs embedded) and French subs. I dunno about the Pal version.

If NTSC is the case, my educated :) guess is that you will have to edit manually the sub files (delete entries) that DVD2SVCD makes, not only delete the unwanted subs. But that's only a guess, and on either permanent or selectable subs, it involves stopping the program and crash recover. Is it really worth it?

Executioner

Hehe, you're probably right - it's not worth it to go through all these hoops just to get the English subs.

Thanks everyone!

As the first post states "This will produce an error message, " if you follow the directions, it will take you to the next sub. Once you find the first "English sub", select that chain.

My error message came after 15 hours of CCE processing :)

you guys are sure that the subs aren't hard coded? (see Atlantis)

@Arianos: Just imagine ST had genuine Klingon dialogues with Alien Subs. I know who would be fooling around with it till doomsday...

I'll get back to you on that... I couldn't find an Alien at all, went through the whole thing, selected all 3 subtitles that DVD2SVCD found, so pretty much my only assumption is something dirty.

32 streams according to subrip, makes me guess that it's a pretty painful thing.

So it might be in one of those 30, or it might be hardcoded. I've seen alot that are hardcoded, so it'll be a touch and go?

Thanks for your help, and if it doesn't work, i'll blame it on the DVD.

From looking at it now, I found funny enough they put the "Alien Subtitles" in Stream 1.

So this was all in vain, thanks for everyone's time.

"Green Dragon" has no 2nd English subtitle (a.k.a., Alien Subtitles). However, the Subrip method mentioned in the Arianos' append worked very nicely. Approx 30% of subs were marked as forced, so it took me 20 minutes or so to manually edit the Subs\PermSubs.txt file which DVD2SVCD generated. It would sure be nice if DVD2SVCD had an option to select only forced subs built in to it!!!

I vote for that feature as well, an option to select forced subs only would be great.
