View Full Version : What other Codecs do I need besides DivX5? That is all I have installed at the moment

Right now all I have installed is the DivX 5 codec. Are there any others I should use? This is a fresh install of XP, and the last time, I was using the following....

All Divx version from 3.11 and up. (I assume I only need the latest)
MPEG4 codec (mpg4c32.dll)
"Play 95" codec (movplay1.dll)
Intel I263
Kristal Studio with DivX
WMV (wmvds32.ax)
smr patch

Do I need any of these still for encoding or for viewing most video types? Are there any others not listed I should use?

If you encode in 3.11 the 3.11 codec and the XviD codec :) no more no less.

What is the XviD codec?

VirtualDub wouldn't open some files, saying I needed MPEG4 codec
But I have DivX installed. Is MPEG4 a different one?

Divx4/5 are MPEG4 codecs. Xvid is as well. Divx 3.x is not MPEG4. But it is kinda similar. Of all of them Xvid is probably my favorite. http://nic.dnsalias.com/ <-Nic's Xvid binary site good and stable if you just want to encode. http://roeder.goe.net/~koepi/ <-Koepi's experimental Xvid binaries not the most stable, but you will see new features and changes here first usually. http://xvid.hopto.org/ <-uManiacs instant CVS auto-build binaries. Hot off the CVS.

If you just want to watch all you need is ffdshow and the hacked MSMPEG4. ffdshow plays back prety much all MPEG4 encoded AVI(except for divx3. It's not MPEG4 you know.). It has adjustable automatic post-processing, will add light noise, and even sharpen the image while you watch. http://cutka.szm.sk/ffdshow/

Maybe you should get also vp3 and real player. They are not popular and I personally do not recommend them to any othrer use than streaming, but some ******* are using them for movies. Get them from www.vp3.com and www.real.com

Neo neko: DivX 3 ;-) 3.11 a is mpeg-4, but it is microsoft and it is really far from the standard(you can't play the with standard mpeg4 players).

Sorry, i have to object:
ffdshow plays DivX 3.11 clips excellent, better than original :D

I have to object, my binaries _are_ stable. If they aren't, you'll see a few consecutive releases until the instability is solved...

I just activate some features that might not be activated in CVS (-> uManiac) and/or by Nic.

It's btw. very likely that I return to compile with M$ compilers.

Koepi

@Koepi: I'm concerned about the compatibility problems which have been recently detected between XviD and other MPEG-4 players such as QT6 and mpeg4ip's mp4player ISO decoder. According to Suxen this can be fixed enabling BFRAMES and using max_bframes = -1. Did you tried this with your builds?

If it really solves the problem I think everyone should use this to guarantee the compatibility with future MPEG-4 players.

BTW it wouldn't hurt enabling BFRAMES_DEC for b-frame decoding support.

MPEG4 is the standard. And the Standard is MPEG4. If it deviates from the standard it is not MPEG4. It can be similar. But it is not MPEG4.

I realized that myself recently. But I was sure that it did not at one point. Oh well. FFdshow for everything now. Hehehehehe.

I never meant that the codec crashes. Far from the truth actually. More that as you stated the feature list can be a bit unstable at times. None of the Xvid binaries are "bad" and they all have their pro's and con's. You all have done excelent jobs.

Let's say that divx3 is based on mpeg-4.
