Maximum Size of DVD-R

What is the maximum size of a DVD-R. Can it hold the full 4.7 gig. like a CD-R can hold 700 MB, or is there a maximum size lower than this. VCDHelp.com quotes 4,608,000 KB, but I'm but this leaves several hundred meg of free space. Surely you can get more on than this, or am I showing my ignorance?

Haven't actually written one yet, but I'm fairly sure that a formatted disk holds about 3.9gig of your data

It depends on the writing mode. An 80 min CD can accept up to 806 MB (without overburning) for VCD/SVCD.

I had a feeling a formatted disc would hold a lot less than the advertised 4.7 gig - wasn't sure how much I could ring out of it.

This is not about formated discs! We are talking about pure math here and misleading advertisment like they do it with HD's for ages. :) They just use 1000 instead of 1024 in their divisions...

4482 is correct. Though, if I were you, I wouldn't be pushing my project this close. Afterall, nothing is worse than spending hours on a project only to find it is only 100MB (or worse, even less) over that! Especially considering it is somtimes hard to estimate the size of your menus after compilation. I try to keep my projects around the 4.25GB (or roughly 4350MB) just to play it safe. Trying to push it too close isn't worth the hassle and you're not going to see any difference in the quality by just 100-200MB or so.
