View Full Version : HELP: Messed up motion when doing TMPG encoding.

OK, so I've been doing TMPG encoding for my DVD-9 to DVD-5 conversion for a few weeks now, but its being weird. On an anime DVD I recently transcoded, when I play the final product I get really choppy motion, I assume this has something to do with the frames not being processed correctly. Doom9's guide says that the correct settings should load up automatically upon loading the .D2V file in TMPG, but they never seem to for me. So, I was wondering what the best ways to find out are for:

1) Aspect Ratio -- On most anime DVDs, TMPG Says under "Video Source Setting" that it is 4:3 704x480. However, IFOedit said 720x480 4:3 so I went with that instead. For Video-Source type, it always loads as "Interlace." Might this have been a problem with a couple of my encodes, I think I tried encoding the Se7en DVD and it has this same problem (choppy motion). Field order always loads as Bottom field first (field b).

2) Encode mode -- I thought this was supposed to be loaded upon loading of the .D2V as well, but it always loads up as "Interlace". Should I ALWAYS set it to 3:2 pulldown when playback (even on Anime DVDs) like Doom9's guide suggests, or is there a way I can find out for each individual DVD what the optimal method is?

OK, these are the things I'm most confused about right now. Any help would be appreciated--I need to solve this choppy motion problem!

Thanks,

Sounds to me like you have the field order reversed.

Try reversing the field order from what you are currently encoding with, then do a short encode using the same source material, and see if there's any improvement. If there is, get back to me, and if there isn't ALSO get back to me!! :)

OK, My choppiness problem is solved, thanks! However--I am still having a difficulty which has proved problematic. Whenever I load up the D2V to this Anime DVD I'm trying to encode in TMPG, it says that the Source Aspect Ratio is 704x480. However, IFOEdit and PowerDVD both say it is 720x480. Which one is correct? Is there a tool which can always give me the correct information for this statistic? Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,

It's most likely 720x480. Most legitimate anime DVD are 720x480. Now if you bought say a Hong Kong bootleg... that's another story.

These particular Anime DVDs I am transcoding are Hong Kong DVDs. Does that mean its a pretty good chance that they are indeed 704x480? Please, someone let me know an accruate way to find out!

Well, not always. A lot of Hong Kong DVD nowadays are straight rips of Japanese or American DVD. But if the DVD isn't released in Japan or America, their next best source is probably laser disk.
But to answer your question, I don't know of an accurate way to find out. My only suggestion is check with some more programs and if more programs say it's 720x480, then I would think it's 720x480 and not 704x480.

Do you care to tell us what the solution / cause actually turned out to be??

I'm not for certain, as I changed a couple of settings, but it probably was the "source field order" set to the wrong setting. I also set the encode mode to "Inverse 3:2 Pulldown" as well instead of "Interlaced."

Please someone let me know about the aspect ratio problem . . . thanks!
