Can anyone help, give me some pointers or any new ideas / tips?...

I've used the CCE guide to encode a movie (PAL), imported the mpv and ac3 file into SpruceUp, played the movie back no probs, created a disk image which I then burn and verified on my Pioneer 104 using Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0 (all sounds good so far...)

I have tried 5 different types of media now, all have worked fine in my Standalone Pioneer 717, but none of them will work in friends players/ps2's, etc...

I have tried FWS's media, which is 100% tested on PS2, also Datasafe Silver Gen 3 - Whitelabel, Princo, Bulpaq and so on... From (www.blankdiscshop.co.uk)

Now I'm wondering if it's the media (which i suspect) or method I'm using for encoding, authoring or even writing the DVD?....

Maybe the firmware on my Drive?

I assume the DVD is in correct format as it wouldn't play in home player?....

Maybe I should try a couple of Pionner or Verbatim DVD-r's?....

Or could it be the PS2 itself (maybe a very old one or something?)

Any help or ideas or suggestions are very welcome (PLEASE!), I'm coming to the end of my tether...

Thanks,
Cinders

Have you looked to see if your friends standalone DVD players appear in the incompatable list? You could just be unlucky (maybe) and also PS2's are renound for problems with playback on DVD-R's. Depending on their software version, I have even come across some that won't play commercially bought DVD's !!!!!
If it plays O.K. in your standalone, I assume, the ifo & bup files must be O.K.

Do they play O.K. in your computer DVD Drive? I know that DVD's I coppied using VOB Instant CD/DVD would play in standalones but not in the computer unless you loaded the files manually. I then got Prassi PrimoDVD and they play O.K. in all now (same files & method etc - just different burning software !!)

I have not tried CCE yet, as if the film is too big I put it onto 2 x DVD-R's. Have you tried putting the Vobs etc in a VIDEO_TS directory and burn the disc like that (rather than via a disc image)? I know it sounds silly, but I try everything in this game. Have a look at http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/derrow/copy.html and also the same but primo.html.
Good luck & happy ripping

My friends stand alones can play DVD-R's, have checked that already.

These DVD's I have made work in my pc dvd drive and laptop dvd drive with no problems at all (even the cheapo media) it's very strange.

One strange problem I have seen is that if I rip vob files from a DVD-5 and import them into Nero (latest version) I can write them fine, no problem there. (DVD-5 to DVD-5)

BUT,

For the film I have created using CCE and SpruceUp (just done the matrix DVD-9 Region2) if I import those VOB files into Nero all is fine until I click burn and it starts then comes up with some error about it not matching some dvd standard?!... cos this be the fault?

Is there a better method to use (I use smartripper,dvd2avi,vfapi,cce,spruceup, then prassi to burn) than the method I'm using?....

I'm currently writing a direct copy of the DVD-5 with Nero onto each different media to see if that works, if it does, I've got some problem with the image spruceup is creating.

Is Spruceup known for errors/bugs? Has anyone seen this fault?

Can anyone suggest a better authoring piece of software?

Thanks for the help, this forum is GREAT!

Is the PS2 modded? If not, then it won't work.

PS2's don't need to be modded to play dvd-rs.

I've tested several PS2's with apple and verbatims and they work without skipping.
