Would it be possible to implement an option to allow user to make a pause during the encoding ? I don't know at all if it is possible, and if virtual dub would allow such a thing, but I would find a great interest in it ( and I should not be the only one )
I hope I posted the question on the right forum, since I do not know if this should be implement inside xvid or virtual dub.

I don't think it's possible with Virtualdub at the moment. What I do is set the thread priority to Idle, if what I want is to use the CPU for other purposes. If you want to pause, turn off your PC and continue later, I don't that is possible.

If you just want to turn your PC off for the night and back on in the morning you can hibernate it. I've done that quite a few times and had no problems.

I use hibernate a lot and never had any problems (I start encoding tests at work and run them whilst travelling home?). I also use the thread priority if I need to crack on with something more important or urgent.

If I wanted to stop the encoding process, it was in part for stopping the computer, but mainly for being able to play. It seems that the combination avisynth + xvid ( windows XP ) consumes a lot of memory, and this makes some games having short freezes every two seconds. I can't foresee when I play ( college with a good network ), and I don't want to waste time of encoding ( the pile of DVD to be ripped is bigger and bigger ).

Make sure you have the latest version of Avisynth. Previous versions really consumed 100's of MBs, but the latest improved the situation a lot.

I should have Avisynth 1.06 ( the dll in my system32 directory is dated from the fourth of may, this year ). And I'm more and more wondering if this is not avisynth 1.06 which raises this problem, because before I was able to play while encoding ( but I also switched to xvid, and I don't remember anymore if Xvid + avisynth 1.05 had the same problem ). And, I've forgot, I have 512 Mo of RAM, so even if xvid + avisynth takes 200 Mo, there should be enough to play.

You can do it with Vidomi, though it doesn't support pausing, shutting down the encoder and then resuming later.
