Right now I have a Yamaha 16x cdrw. I can burn dvd2svcd images at 8x and keep the audio/video in sync, and not have the picture break apart. Anything above 8x screws up my svcd when I play it in my apex 500w. Next Friday I'm going to order a Lite on 40x from newegg.com (only $70) and use it to burn all my svcds. So does anyone have a Lite on, if so whats the fastest speed you can burn without compromising quality?

ps. I know that 4x is recommended but surely I can go to at least 24x with this new burner.

I have two lite-on 32x and three lite-on 24x burners. Burn at max speed all the time.
24X takes 4mins 20secs full 800MB SVCD
32X takes 3mins 55secs
I'd imagine 40X will save you another 20 or so seconds per cd. I believe there are two 40X models of lite-on though.

Remember to burn a copy of an SVCD on-the-fly you need a source with high DAE. I have five lite-on LTD 163 DVD-ROMS and they can all supply DAE fast enough to burn at 32X. I don't think they can do 40X though..cuz I think the average DAE speed is 37X IIRC.

Also after burning close to 80 svcds or so sometimes winXP will switch my dvd-rom to PIO mode. Device manager and delete secondary ide channel and reboot, problem solved it'll be back in DMA.

I use a 40x lite-on to burn some of my SVCDs.
I burn at 32x, not 40x. Why? When I burned at 40x, I tended
to get CDs that would occasionally cause hangups when playing
them on my DVD player (Sampo DVE611). They were recoverable
hangups...a few seconds and then playback would continue, and
usually not more than one hangup per disc. But I wasn't getting
any hangups when I burned at slower speeds...

...So now I burn my SVCDs at 32x on my 40x Lite-on. And that's
fast enough anyway...

I have the Lite-On LTR-40125S and use it at maximum speed all the time without any problems. Just last week I overclocked it to 48X and I still use it at maximum speed with the benefit that it now burns P-CAV and with Mount Rainier support.

Having said that you'll have to do your own tests with your usual media and your DVD. Your particular combination of writer/media/DVD may allow you 40X writes, but it may also restrict you to 8X (you can't write any slower that 8X).

4X is really a standby statement. Meaning if you burn faster and you have a problem try another burn at 4x or the lowest your burner will do. Any faster and you will need to do your own tests.
Make sure to watch the SVCD all the way through. Sometimes problems will show up in the middle or beyond and the first half is fine. Look for green blocks and sometimes a jitterey picture.
Some can burn at 40X without issue while others are still stuck at 4X.
With Via Chipset motherboards be aware that there is a known issue with the PCI bus and this does include the IDE as well. This is pretty much the reason I cannot burn faster then I do. I have tested my burner on a friends Intel Chipset computer and it burns much faster without issue on his machine.

So basically the only way to know for sure what your individual machine can do is to test it.

yes mrbass and markrb are correct i would like 2 add that trying it on your system is the only way 2 find out what is max burn speed is. Like mrbass i burn at 24x speed without a problem, i would only advice this if you have the time and money 2 do such tests that in the end could lead you to messed up disks or like myself and some others 2 a faster burn time.

have the lite on 48x 12x 48x. have verbatim 32x cdr and i burn at 32x with vs02 firmware. no problems at all; perfect discs.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
(www.cdfreaks.com goto the lite on forum and search about overclocking your drive. totally safe but read the warnings ie... might void warranty... they are the same drives just with different firmwares and speeds on the drives! even a faq of which drives can be overclocked to faster speeds.)

BTW if u have any of the 40125s drives u can upgrade it to 48x ( mine is really a 40125s with the 48125w firmware). i get 3:05 burns with the 32x verbatims.

i can not wait for 40x and 48x cds to hit my area. ( i have tested at 40 and 48 x and the speed is great but the cd are not good at certain points so i leave smartburn on which limits the verbatims to the rated 32x.)

:D :D :D :D :D

@quadguy
I had the same problems, but only if the buffers run empty and the burn-proof-function will continue the disk. Maybe your reading device is to slow, and your hangups are at the point, where the laserbeam will start the 'second burning'. If a had a buffer underrun at 30% the discs hangs aprx. after 30% of the playtime, so I think this was the reason of my problems.

the reason I opted for 32x lite-on rather than 40x was cuz of a small amount of errors reported for burning at 40x. If burning at 32X it won't exhibit these errors ..thus it's fruitless IMHO (for me) to have payed $10 or $20 more for the 40x at the time.

i switched back to win2k because of this problem.. winxp will sometimes switch my dvd and cdrw drives back to PIO mode? wat is up with that? EVEN though i set it to "DMA IF AVAILABLE" it still wont set it.. causing me to switch back to win2k.. is there a way to solve this problem by deleting the ide channels as u mentioned?

no...but oh well...just delete it. I just notice the time and if says it took 9 mins I don't even check if it's PIO mode anymore cuz I know it is. So I delete the secondary channel and reboot and continue on another 60 or so cds.
