View Full Version : Is Real Video 9 really that good???

I love it! using a GUI and an avs-file (created by gordian knot and edited by myself to include audio) encoding is very easy and the quality is awsome!!!
I tried to compress the movie D-Tox using DivX5, XviD and SBC. The quality never satisfied me until I tried Real Video 9! It simply is better than all the other codecs...
Or do I just think so??? (Using rv9, I left 1 audio-stream away, but these 64kbps won't make that difference...)
P.S. Is there any possibility to include 2 audio streams into 1 real media file???

Some Questions
What software (GUI) were you using?
Is the codec free?
Can these strems hold other audio than ra?

yes man, just encode video and audio separately (i.e. 1x video file and 2x audio files) and create 2x .smil files loading each one of the 2 audio's alternatively, i.e.:
<smil>
<head>
<layout>
<root-layout backgroundColor="black" width="336" height="258"/>
<region id="video_region" z-index="1"/>
<region id="text_region" top="208" z-index="2"/>
</layout>
</head>
<body>
<par>
<video src="video.rmvb" region="video_region" fill="remove"/>
<audio src="audio-EN.rm" region="text_region" fill="freeze"/>
<textstream src="epoch-subtitles.rt" region="text_region" fill="freeze"/>
</par>
</body>
</smil>
and just change audio-EN.rm with audio-FR.rm for your second audio file.
You may have an alternate (and cooler) mode by following the producer guide's rules, letting you choose the language stream with the options/preferences menu in RealOne Player, which'd let you change language "on the fly" as you watch the movie, but it's waaaaaayy more complicated.
For info on where to find the guide and which chapter to look for, see other realvideo posts in this discussion area.
have fun!

For comics and low bitrates, Realmedia 9 is really the best. Especially high motion scenes really look good.
However I don't like the quality in low motion scenes, seems like some blocks are moving here and there were they shouldn't and the picture is not as sharp as with Divx 5.

I'll give it a try!
P.S. Can I demux the audio stream form an existing file??? I encoded D-Tox (looks great!!!) and got an 661 MB file (1 audio+ one video stream)... I don't want to encode the whole bunch again, so can I demux???

I think that real 9 smooths video too much.
Grab my gui from http://less.filetap.com/rm9/

That's true. I only use it for comics because there it is so much better than Divx. For real movies, it looks a bit like WM8 (that is: not good)

if the quality is good enough, is there a possibility to use the codec for creation of video streams to store it in avi/ogg? if the compression is iso-mpeg4 compatible the result should also work in avi?
is this possible, has anybody tried this?

I guess Realmedia employs a whole team of security experts only to make sure you can NOT encode Realvideo streams in an avi container... :rolleyes:

Real video has nothing to do with mpeg4!
Ps. Razorblade2000: Your gui version is really old!

Maybe you should remove the file you have attached, so that nobody downloads it.
