View Full Version : VCD - 800MB mpeg or not?

OK, I was under the impression that VCD's were burned in mode2, meaning the cdr can hold 800MB of data instead of the usual 700MB. Now, I have a 750MB mpg that I'm trying to author as a VCD in Nero... And its telling me that the file is too big!

Is this something going wrong with Nero, or am I wrong about the 800MB thing?

Funny you should mention that. I have LOTR on 4 SVCD, and have extracted each disk to the hard drive. The MPEG files on three of the discs, are 804MB, and disc 4 is 772MB. I've tried to copy them back to a CD-R, but get the message that the file is too big, and when I look on the original discs, they reflect the same file size on the CD's, how on earth do I get them to burn onto a CD-r?

Sounds like they were Overburned... If only my burner supported Overburn :(

if you are using 80min cdr, go to peferences in Nero and set them to 79min 59sec 59frm, this should fix it.

How is that going to fix it? 80 minutes is still 800MB in mode2.

I still get the message "Not enough room on Media", and then the operation is aborted. All 4 disk's have this burned on to them. When I use Blindwrite/Blindread, I can back these disks up with out a problem, but to extract them off the disc, to the hard drive, and then try to burn them back on to a blank CDR, it's a no go. Problem is, I don't have the original disc's, and image file for disc 3 got corrupted some how, and while all looks well, then movie pause's right toward the end of the disc as they are trying to jump the broken section of the stairs.

This is a real bummer, any idea's??

Also, How is adjusting for an 80 minute disc, going to allow for 800MB, while an 80 min. disc, is only 700MB??

You would have only 700 MB if you burned in MODE1.
However, (x/s)VCDïs are burned in MODE2 which allows 13-14% (I think) more data to be packed onto a CD-R. That is due to some recovery information that is leaved out in that mode. (Okay, I admit: I canït explain it in a convincing way, right now  )

Thing is I tried using Nero in Mode2 as suggested, and making the necc. settings at 79:59:59 but still got the message, "Not enough room on media". And yes I am sure that I have an 80min/700MB disc. This is the only media I buy.

A thought has just occured to me. Since I am able to make a disc image with Blindread, I'll try using the files on a DVD-R, and going that route and burning it back to CD-R...

Will keep you posted to let you know my findings.

you should use nero with a wizard or template of "video cd". if you choose mode2 it uses mode 2 form 1, which is quite similar to mode1 (by file size and error protection scheme) and does NOT give you the extra space you need with vcd.

hope it helps
cheers

Difflam, when i first started burning, i could only burn about 650mb on a 700mb cdr, cause of the software, then i upgraded, and now i can the full 700mb; so it's eater your software, the burner, or something very simple.

coldfire, if your svcds are overburned, you have to enable the overburn option at perferences to 81min, that should be enough for 804mb, then check the disk-at-once option to enable overburn; i don't really know why you can fit 800mb on a 700mb cdr, but it's amazing isn't, if you don't believe that you can, then how is it that your LOTR svcd are all over 700mb.

dani82, Yes Quite Right!!

Well here's what has happened, first off, Blindread/write, won't reconize a DVD burner, so it's a no go with that route trying to make the image file from the DVD burner, or even after writing it to a DVD-RW, it won't work with a DVD-ROM either. Now for Nero, I make all the necc. changes to the settings as you have described, but the record button, stays grayed out, I dunno what to do, anyone have any ideas?

Also I am using a PlexWriter 12/4/32, does this unit support overburning?

ok,

before you can start burning, make sure the video menu is highlighted and the file browser menu is not, that should be why its gray, and your burner does support overburning.

@Dani82 - you are not overburning when you put 800mb onto a 700mb cd using mode 2. This is the normal capacity for mode 2 since it doesn't have to use use the same error checking as mode 1 does. Nero doesn't have to be set to overburning to achieve this. It will burn a 800mb mode 2 file with no problems using the default settings.

Dani82,

I've got the file section highlighted, and the burn button is still grayed out. Thought at first it was because of an over burn, but I tried the same with a bunch of MP3 files, and the burn button is active then, even if I set it to MOde2, So I am at ends as to why the burn button is not active. I've even tried it on the other two computers I have and get the same results.

I've even went the route of using a template, and then no template, and it makes no differeance, still unable to access burning. By the way this is the files to the 3rd disc of LOTR, and since all of the necc. files are on the hard drive, I am trying to make an exact copy to CD, (it's in SVCD format), so when I use the template, the sub directories of EXT, and SVCD are not allowing me to delete files there and put in the original's, but the subdirectory MPEG2, which is empty does allow me to put in the MPEG2 file from the hard drive. This is another reason, I've tried to stay away from using the template, and just go the Mixed CD option and make sure all of the settings for the MODE2 are set properly, even the 79:59:59 settings in options under file. No matter though which avenue I take all of them leave the burn button grayed out. I've clicked back and forth between the two windows,(file, Browser) and still to no avail.

At my wits end...

Nero is a pain in the ass for burning mpg vcd/svcd straight onto a disc. the easiest way is to use VCDeasy and make an image, and then either burn that in Nero, or use daemontools to mount the image and do a direct CD copy. either method should work without a problem.

Why's Nero a pain in the ass for burning an mpg to VCD? All you do it select VCD in the wizard, and then drag n drop your mpg.... whats so hard about that?
