View Full Version : Skipping vob-files

What would be the best way to handle missing vob-files. The reason they are missing is because of a damaged DVD, so I had to drop one file during ripping. Now the big question is, is there anything to be be considered before processing a movie with a missing vob-file? Or will DVD2SVCD process the movie just with a couple of minutes less?

As long as the vob files are numbered in order and not skippng a number there shouldn't be too much of a problem. If you are missing say Vob #3 then just rename #4 to 3 and the rest to follow.
This has never happened to me so I am only guessing, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

did you try ripping with both the internal routines and vstrip?

You don't mind missing a large part of your DVD ? Is your DVD scratched ? In this case, you can maybe use an old trick that works for damaged CDs. Put toothpaste (yes toothpaste !) on the whole DVD (not the label side !), wash with water and dry with a delicate towel. Then retry to rip your DVD. With scratched CDs, this works 95 % of the time.

Thanks for all the input. The DVD was rented and I have returned it already. (Actually if you return a DVD the same day you pay only half the price so I didn't have time to fiddle around much. Next time though I am going to try the tooth-paste trick. Furthermore, I complained about that DVD so maybe they will provide a substitute anytime soon.)
Here the situation:
The readable vob-files are on my HD ripped with DVD decrypter (just movie). To outline the severeness of the DVD damage, I skipped ripping file no. 4 after 587 errors with DVD decrypter (no of readings attempts was set to max - 15). Reading that DVD with smart-ripper lead to sure crash in Windows.
Unfortunately I forgot to bring the log-files. The DVD2SVCD process stopped at muxing (maybe the audio was too short - I will post the logs later). Video encoding went well, but even that I am currently not able to verify (can't watch the mpv-file at the time).

DVDdecrypter and DVD2SVCD do not work together very well. You are better off either using something else to convert the video or get another copy of that DVD and only use the included rippers. At worst use SmartRipper, but I can pretty much assure you that DVDdecrypter and DVD2SVCD won't work right together.
