Hmm, so my new NEC 12x arrives yesterday. With smartripper AND dvd decryptor both, I can only rip ~3x. I have DMA access turned on, the DVD-ROM is the only thing on my secondary IDE channel (where I had no problems with my 2x Creative)


Here's my relevant system specs:
Athlon 2000+
512mb RAM
Soyo Dragon+
2x 45gb 7200's striped
Windows XP pro

I tried smartripper with aspi 4.6, 4.71, and without aspi.
I tried dvd decrypter with aspi 4.6, 4.71.

I also have a nec 16x dvd rom. My rips start around 3x and steadly increase speed and end around 5.5x. What kind of speed do you think you should be getting?

I would think close to 12x. That's why I upgraded from my 2x and purposely didn't buy a toshiba.

That 12x is only the rate for the very outmost track. Its rated at 5x for the innermost track.
