join 2 avis

I read the Doom Guide how to join 2 AVIs but I have a question about this method.

The guide told me to "enter a small value in the End offset field"
but why?

I have join 2 avis just with append video segment before with no problems.
What value should I enter?

I am still looking for an explanation but as long as I can join two or more avis with VBR MP3 without any kind of problems that may occur somehow, I do it without entering an offset value.

I just want to cut my movies to fit them on 2 or more CDs until I get a DVD-Burner, so I can put them together again in one piece without gettin strange kind of problems.
