Just curious what audio people are using for their rips. I have seen more ac3 audio from the release groups and also some using ogg now.

Don't you mean vorbis? ;)
And anyway, wheres Real Audio huh? Okay, so I'll admit it, I've succumb to the evils of 64k RA 8 (closed format whatever :P)
oh yea, howabout aac too? lol.. sorry to be so critical and all but come on theres more than 3 audio formats out there

yeah RadicalED, he also might want to specifically state that this is for DivX, or XviD or MP4, or what.

Sorry fellas, this was originally in Gordian Knot and got moved...

Specefically for DivX and yes, ogg vorbis.

If there are others you use let me/us know. There are more than 3 formats, but think this will cover 80% of those used...

:D

I used to use mp3 audio on my divx rips but, after some practice for feeling comfortable with the format, I started to use vorbis audio specially for more than one language rips.
I'd like to try AC3 audio, but I don't want all my friends (not "techies") having to install and register iviaudio.ax to listen my movies.

I am not even sure what file I have used to listen to ac3. It was packed in a release I came across ;)

If it is an action movie then I use ac3.For "quiet" movies mp3.But I have never used ogg and I think this is the time to do it.

I have fiddled with ogg vorbis with some music cd's. I didn't hear a great sound improvent in the 192 range (versus mp3 using either lame or radium), but it kicks mp3's ass in the lower bitrange (64-96 Kbps).

FWIW :p

Very easy!

2ch audio rip- Vorbis
2ch audio musicc- MPC
multi-channel- AC3 @ full bitrate or transcode to 256kbps for a 1CD rip

@MaTTeR:

You are using Musepack for audio compression? That's interesting. I stumbled over that format some days ago. I tried it in combination with CDex as external encoder and played it in Winamp with the plugin from musepack.org.
I really liked the results, I was hardly able to tell the difference to
the original CD with the standard settings.
What is your experience with that format and what settings do you use for encoding?

@tiki4

I actually had already archived my music collection using Vorbis -q5 before I had decided to try MPC. It's very hard to beat MPC at high bitrates I suppose. So right now I'm still testing the waters but happy with what I've heard.

MaTTeR,

Thanks to the info. I haven't used vorbis yet for a divx rip, but might fiddle with it. I am happy using 192 ac3 for now for my 2 cd rips. Son't have 5.1 up here so no reason for it...for now :D

matter: u use >256kbps audio for 1 cd rips? are you talking about some 40 min tv episodes?

since divx502 with its awesome pro features (gmc+b+psyvis strong) i always keep the german and english audio as ~74kbps ( q 0.05 ) ogg and go for 1CD @ 704x...
90min movies often dont even use the 700mb. (yes for really long and bright movies i have to reduce the resolution)

MaTTeR
13th June 2002, 00:51
If the movie doesn't deserve the entire 448kbps then yes I transcode it with SoftEncode down to around 256kbps and burn it to a mode2cd(aka.XCD).

I only encode full length DVD movies.

Suprised to see .ogg as close to mp3 as it is...

Thanks to all those that voted! :p

Wow! never expected ogg to become so many votes!

HOI! where are MP3 fans?! MP3 rulez! I won't be happy until we reach at least 50% :D

PeterTheMaster
16th June 2002, 21:21
how can you talk like this? did you ever try ogg?

MaTTeR
16th June 2002, 21:25
@Awatef

Why would you prefer MP3 over Vorbis? It's hard to beat the true VBR of Vorbis at medium bitrates.

Awatef
16th June 2002, 23:25
@ Peter & Matter
I know, I just hate it, because its name is crap :D
MP3 (the word) sounds cooler :D

PeterTheMaster
17th June 2002, 00:47
i think there is nothing more to say about this. now i know why and _what_ people are still sticking to mp3...

Awatef
17th June 2002, 14:48
@ peter
Not only that, it is "complicated" to install a directshow filter to here the sound. I like the convenience and the universal compatibility of MP3.
And other things like editing which isn't as easy as with AVIs that have MP3 sound.
So why bother to get only 32kbps bitrate saving?!

It's like french people say: "c'est tiré par les cheveux", I don't know how to say this in english :D

Charlieds
17th June 2002, 17:04
@Awatef
I see your point.
In fact, that directshow filter actually requires a double click on the exe.

Too much for an end user.

Awatef
17th June 2002, 18:54
@ Charlieds
And that's why the " " around complicated ;)

PeterTheMaster
17th June 2002, 20:45
but if you say that the " " deactivates your complicated, it deactivates your argument. because thats all you said.

Awatef
17th June 2002, 21:08
no, it doesn't deactivate the argument, it makes it relativ: for MP3 you don't need to do ANYTHING, for OGG you have to download the filter and install it and that's is SOMETHING. As nothing is divisible by 0 and things divided through 0+ give an infinite result, it is worth to say "complicated" :D

1 cd rips = 128-160 abr js mp3
2 cd rips = 160 abr js mp3 or original 5.1 AC3

Soon AAC for 2 cd rips

audio cd (mp3 for car) 256 stereo CBR (Compatibility)
audio cd (mp3 for comp) Stereo abr 256 (min56 max 320)

LAME always :D

Beave

1 CD = 2 languages each ABR 128 and/or ABR 112

2 CD = alt--preset fast standard and/or AC3 5.1

Commentary track = mono VBR -V9 results around 60kbps, sometimes Ogg Vorbis @ q -0.0001 (Zoom Players external audio track feature)

Specials on DVD = Ogg Vorbis @ q -0.0001

Why I don't use Vorbis more?
I prefer DivX (and its decoder), so OGM gives broken Frames and cutting the movie for 2CDs is a pain in the budd with OGMs (finding the right cutting frame is hard and OggCut terminates with some exceptions all the time on both my computers).
Before watching a 2CD movie I like to join both parts with nandub on the HD. OGM don't support that as far as I know.

kilg0r3

i have never had crash problems with ogg cut. Yet, finding the cutting frame
is a pain yes; at least, since the b-frame code has been inserted into Xviv (don't get me wrong! there is no b-frame support yet). when moving the slider in ogg cut you never really know where you are, and you never know if you have caught the next keyframe or not.

For 1 CD rips vorbis is perfect, however, because you can save about 20 mb or more for the video; depends on how many audio streams you want.

Lastly, tell me how to intgrate more than two audio streams into an avi.

=> No format is objectively best. it heavily depends not only on sound quality/bit/second but also on what other features you need or don't need. => The poll should at least be subcategorized into a 1CD and a 2CD section.

Beave

I f I'm not mistaken more than 2 audio streams in an avi is only possible with CBR MP3s. You need avimux for that. All other things I tried resulted in synch problems.
I use the external audio track option, which only works in Zoom Player and Micro DVD as far as I know. The Player simply tries to play a seperate audio file "besides" the avi. It is ok for me with the comments, since they don't need to be in perfect synch.

kilg0r3
20th June 2002, 20:39
@ Beave

that's what i mean. using the ogg media container, it is very easy to merge even more than three audio streams with a video stream. BTW bsplayer is also able to load external audio files, and, AFAIK, it works quiet well; even with AC3.

The broken frames in ogm are a problem of the decoder and do not appear when using the ffdshow filter. What is there which one could like better about the original divx decoder than ffdshow?

Beave
21st June 2002, 01:44
Hmm maybe I should give ffdshow a try. I'm itching to make 800mb CDs.
Some people said that it has worse quality and I find it hard to compare myself. I kind of started to like the Film effekt, though...
